Trains from Paris CDG to STJ PDP

Can I get train tickets on the day of travel to get the TGV from Paris to Bordeaux and then Bordeaux to Bayonne, and then bus or train from Bayonne to STJ PDP? Or is it absolutely essential to pre book train tickets online?

This is something I'm fairly worried about and would really really appreciate some advice.

I don't know about Paris to Bayonne. However, I always travel without reservations. The only exception is airplanes because their system is not friendly to spur of the moment travellers.

The only way it should be a worry is if its a disaster that you have to wait till the next day ... Since there are several trains per day probably worst case is waiting for the next train.

Why not contact them?

I did take the train from Gare Bayonne to SJPdP. I bought the ticket when I arrived at the station and was on the first train that departed. The train is TER 62.

It is NOT absolutely essential to pre book train tickets on line.

As whariwharangi notes you can see schedules up to 3 months in advance at this SNCF (French National Rail Road ) link. >> http://www.voyages-sncf.com/. You DO NEED a reservation for any TGV train and it is cheaper to book the ticket well in advance; you do NOT need a reservation for the line 62 TER train from Bayonne to SJPdP. However you can book everything with a live clerk at the station the day of departure if you wish.

You mention Paris to BORDEAUX continuing to Bayonne and SJPdP. Is this because you are planning to to go directly by train from Paris CDG airport? If so use this handy English web site to find the TGV station at CDG. >> http://www.easycdg.com/1/ground-transpo ... sdegaulle/

If you are not planning to go by train from CDG the route is usually is generally a TGV train from the Paris Gare Montparnasse to BAYONNE and then a regional TER line 62 train from Bayonne to SJPdP. Generally there are 4 TGV trains to Bayonne from Paris Montparnasse each day and many TER line 62 trains from Bayonne to SJPdP.

However If you wish you could take the regular overnight train from Paris Gare Austerlitz to Bayonne to connect with a morning TER line 62 train to SJPdP.

Thankyou for your help! We are getting the train from Paris CDG and are staying within the airport the night before we get the train. I really appreciate all of the useful links and experienced advice. We are going to get tickets on the day of departure as the website keeps telling me that one leg of my journey may be sold out... This worries me!!

Yes indeed, you can buy your tickets there without making any reservation before but the only advantage when you make your reservation is that you have no risk to have a train full.

You can book your tickets at the station for any destination if there is seats available for the choosen train.

Not from CDG. Eurolines may have bus service to Bordeaux from Paris. Check here >> http://www.eurolines.com/en/. Why do you want a bus to Bordeaux and not Bayonne ? In Bayonne you catch the line 62 TER train to SJPdP. Unless the train is not running there is no regular bus to SJPdP from Bayonne.

It's very last minute to change plans as we are arriving in Paris on Wednesday afternoon, we will stay the night and then fly to Biarritz on thursday morning. it will be much cheaper than getting the train but I really haven't researched Biarritz and don't know how far the train station is from airport etc.

At advice would be helpful!

Flying Paris to Biarritz (BIQ) is usually the quickest and cheapest option. Biarritz airport is only a short bus (even a taxi from) from Bayonne where you get the train to SJPP. The biggest problem might be getting a bed at a reasonable cost in Bayonne. You can also stay in Biaritz (might be more accommodation options) but you need to change trains on your way to SJPP.
Depending on your arrival time in Paris you can usually fly to BIQ (Air France (Orly) or Easy Jet (CDG)) the same day and not have to overnight in Paris.

You'll likely want to catch the #14 bus from Biarritz (Anglet Airport) to Gare Bayonne. Urban bus takes about half an hour - 45 minutes, see the chronoplus schedule. Bus stop is just outside the front door of the relatively small airport. If I recall correctly, cost is 1 euro and they make change though prefer you have exact fare. Bus stops outside of Gare Bayonne, see wikipedia picture for recognition. The SNCF TER 62 train to SJPdP leaves from Gare Bayonne.

Apparently the TER 62 line will be shut down for maintenance for sometime this summer. A bus will run in its place. I don't know dates when this occurs. So there is not confusion when they point to a bus when you expect a train.

The French railroad SNCF has announced that through 28 June BUSES will replace trains on the TER line 62 route which runs from Bayonne to SJPdP.

Tickets purchased earlier for the train are still usable on the buses. For those without rr tickets new tickets for the buses can be purchased in the Bayonne railroad station ticket office in the station lobby. The price to SJPdP is roughly 10 euros. There are no reserved seats.

The buses will depart from the parking area in front of the Bayonne station.

When you arrive In SJPdP go to the pilgrim office of the Amis du Chemin de Saint Jacques at 39 rue de la Citadelle. Their telephone is 05 59 37 05 09. In season the pilgrims office is open from 7h30 to 12h30 and then from 13h30 to 22h. They can provide you with a Credential and on site lodging assistance. They keep up to the minute lists of available space throughout the SJPdP area.
