Hi All - Has anyone taken a bus or train from San Sebsatian to Lugo? My girlfriends and I want to dip a toe in the Norte before crossing over to the Primitivo. Any suggestions for how to do this transportation-wise would be greatly appreciated. And, I know there may be well-meaning suggestions to not do this, but this will be my third Camino and there is a method to my madness.

Cheers,
Mary

Renfe train from San Sebastian to Lugo.

You might want to try Renfe from San Sebastian to Monforte de Lemos and Monbus from M de L to Lugo.

Or if you want to go the SLOW route ...

Take Euskotren/Metro Donostialdea from San Sebastian to Bilbao and FEVE train (See Renfe site) from Bilbao to Ferrol. You have to connect the dots via Santander. Then Renfe train from Ferrol to Lugo.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Are you planing to walk the Primitivo? If so, from Lugo? Honnestly if from Lugo I would not bother. Start in Oviedo.

Look at the alsa.es site for buses, renfe.es for trains. Or rome2rio.com

My guess is that you may have to go via Bilbao.

If going via Oviedo, whether by ALSA or FEVE, as an alternative to continuing to Ferrol:-
1) ALSA to Grandas de Salime and walk to A Fonsagrada, approx 24kms, (no public transport) then local bus to Lugo. however IMO the best part of the Primitivo is between Salas and Lugo/Ferreira.

2) ALSA to Lugo from Oviedo goes via Leon with (I think) a change at Ponferrada.

3)We have used the FEVE several times between Santander and Lugo, but have left the FEVE at Ribadeo to catch the bus from there to Lugo.

You might also check blablacar.com near the date you actually need a ride.

Thank you everyone for the most helpful replies. A look at bus and train schedules confirms that it will be a very long trip, but doable if that's what we choose. We're still tossing ideas around, but the information you provided will help us in our planning
