Traveling with Walking poles

Time of past OR future Camino
I have completed two Camino's in 2015, my first was the final 116km from Sarria to Santiago with a group of 19 for the Holy week in April, second in September on my own I walked from Melide to Finesterre around 180 km, my plans are, God Willing, to walk the whole Camino Frances in June and July for which I am currently preparing!
hi pilgrims! I have some retractable walking poles for my Camino but am unsure wether they are on to go in hold in the airplane when I get on, or should I check them in beforehand online and add them as extra baggage!? I'm unsure of the rules for walking poles on flights and what is best to do any thought!? Many thanks

Hi Rosie, a search of the Forum might have led you to conclude that you will not get an answer to your question here. What you will get is opinion and argument: lots of both. See this recent thread:
I have a question about carrying my backpack on the plane.

If your poles will pack down sufficiently to be entirely enclosed in your pack - well then there are members who report successfully carrying poles into an aircraft cabin. Meanwhile be prepared to lose your poles at security or be prepared to check them at the last moment ie give yourself plenty of time to make your flight.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Hi Rosie

Not sure who you are flying with but if it's Easy Jet then you will have to check them in. I put mine in my backpack and checked the lot in, it's the same price whether it's just the poles, or the poles and backpack.
Sorry can't vouch for other airlines from the UK.

Hi Rosie,my pack is always going "down" under in the plain.
Wish you well and a Buen Camino, Peter.

When I asked the TSA, they said hiking poles were no problem. They are considered equivalent to a cane. And I flew all around Europe (Germany, France, U.K. And back to the US) last year while carrying my pack and poles on the plane.

Hi everyone! I got on fine with mine I just wrapped them up thoroughly.. Flew from gatwick to Paris with easyjet and they were fab :) although I ended up passing one on yesterday as walking with two wasn't comfortable I find one better!

If you want to be sure your poles get there check them. It is entirely up to the agent at the security checkpoints. Sometimes yes and sometimes not.
