Umbrella In Carry On

Has anyone had an issue in taking a non-collapsible umbrella in carry on? TSA says umbrellas are not an issue and to check with the airline. Airlines say umbrellas are fine if they fit under your seat (or I am assuming in your carry on bag). The dimensions for carry on are now 22x14x9.

I have the Six Moon Silver Shadow Carbon which comes to 25" non-collapsible. Doing a little math (geometry?), it would fit within the rectangle that 22x14x9 makes. The umbrella would fit (albeit awkwardly) within my pack if needed but I'd rather just have it strapped to the side.

I have the option of taking an umbrella I already have, or not and buying one there. Lots of talk on here about poles and carry-on but not much on the umbrellas. Flying in and out of Madrid if it makes a difference.

I fly with cabin baggage only & ended up leaving my full-size umbrella at home in favour of the collapsible travel version...I didn't want to risk it. It's not just the airline you have to consider; you could get a 'difficult' person going through airport security who have their own rules separate to the airlines. In the end, I based my decision on how I'd feel if my brolly was confiscated...& left it at home.

I believe that British Airways allows passengers to carry a full size umbrella or walking stick separate to hand luggage (but not a golfing umbrella or hiking poles). I guess you inquire about your airline's policy.
Sounds like TSA has no problem with it. I would guess that Madrid airport security would also allow it.

Strapping a brolly to the outside of a cabin bag would make it harder to stow, so that seems pointless to me - but if it helps you to get on board without drawing attention, then why not.

Thank you everyone! A few hours before departure and I am still deciding. Maybe less worry to leave mine here and pick one up there but I do like the one I have. Will probably be a last minute decision like several other things in my pack...

You do get some really nice umbrellas from the "Bazar Chino" stores that seem to be everywhere nowadays and they are not expensive (10€ or so). My first port of call on my first day, if the weather is threatening, is to buy one of those. Unfortunately I usually have to discard it or give it away at the end of my journey because I am never sure if the airline will let me take it on board.
