Unique restaurants in Santiago

I was going over a journal of my last Camino and was reminded about a really unique eatery just off the plaza called , The Black Cat , or el gato negra Everything was local including the in filtered wine . No very big but welcoming. I’ve been there twice and will go again. Anybody have their own recommendation?

I guess you refer to O Gato Negro? I believe Metha is a typing error?

A favorite of mine in Santiago is "Restaurante Tarara". It is small, cozy and intimate, and fills up very quickly. They are only open for dinner and prices are very reasonable for the quality.

I went there a few years ago and despite being a stone’s throw from a quite amazing fish market pretty much the entire carta of pescados and mariscos was ‘off’. Still - an authentic place.

Yeah...totallyagree with your recommendation for O Sendeiro. Had dinner there in Dec '21, and will return again in June this year. Food, service and overall ambiance...all excellent.

I will make a dinner reservation at O Sendeiro this coming May when I'm in Santiago; looks and sounds like a great choice!

Hmm, I've never been to The Black Cat, but now I want to check it out! Another unique restaurant in Santiago that I highly recommend is Casa Marcelo. This restaurant has a similar atmosphere to my favorite European restaurant, Riwa (https://www.riwa-restaurant.de/de/). But the food is a bit different. f you're looking for something more casual, check out O Curro da Parra. I hope you like it!

I remember someone mentioning this place. But I always wonder what everyone's definition of reasonable is. . I agree when you have quality paying more is reasonable. But there is always a baseline. One person's reasonable is another person's expensive or cheap. Do you remember the price range? Thanks

I remember it as very reasonable for 10 € five years ago.

Thanks so much for the information. For really well made food I would say 14 Euros is really an excellent price. Even for this budget pilgrim. I look forward to eating there in November.
Just had to edit the post as I went to the link and then google maps. I know this place. It is down the street from the pilgrim office. I almost ate there last year but there were 8 of us and as Chrissy said it is small.

@lt56ny, this should help you decide. Google shows only one $ sign...not two $$, or three $$$. Pretty reasonable, especially considering they do not serve lunch. I make sure to have dinner there every time I am in Santiago.

Yes, Casa Marcello is fabulous. I seem to remember that they don't take bookings, so turn up early. The chef asks if you eat everything and then they feed you what the chef wants to cook. One of the highlights was a whole deep fried scorpion fish which you eat everything including the fins and bones. It was divine. One of the best meals that I have eaten.

Forwarded this thread to my daughters yesterday. We will be walking the Portuguese this June. They told me they already had booked a reservation for the O Senderio and had seen the O Gato Negro on Tik Tok and were thinking of going there as well. Last time in Santiago we could not get into O Senderio but were able to eat at Porto do Obradorio. It is a high end place, but the food and service were excellent. My daughters liked the Bar La Tita. It is known for its tortillas. My girls said the tortillas were the best they have ever eaten. I left before we were seated as we had waited an hour for an outside table instead of the short wait for an inside one. They finally told us we would not be getting an outside table that night. I decided to eat elsewhere.
