Uterga or Obanos

Which of these 2 places would you recommend to stay overnight? We prefer private accommodation, there are 4 of us walking from Pamplona. Thanks

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Hi @auburnfive

According to Gronze there are private accommodation options in both Uterga and Obanos.

I guess it depends also on what distance you wish to walk that day - and the next - as Obanos is a further 4.5 kms on from Uterga. And a little more if you take the detour to Ermita de Santa Maria de Eunate. 😎

If you are walking during the summer season your choice may be determined by where you can find four private rooms. After descending the Alto de Perdon the first viĺlage, Uterga, is a most welcome and popular stop.

I stayed in a private room in the Albergue in Uterga. I was kept up throughout the night by the barking dogs in the neighbors yard. That has been three years ago. But I would walk on to Obanos and take the chance it’s better.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
I would also look at where you want to stop the day after. On the CF if may not make that much of a difference but it could add a significant amount of kilometers the next day. Also wanting to stay in private hostels may limit your choices.

You may want to check out Casa Raichu in Orbanos. I stayed there last September. I think all the rooms were on the 2nd floor (with shared bath) so nice and quiet. There are rooms with twin beds. The owner is a good cook so I would recommend purchasing the dinner since the there is only 1 restaurant/bar and a market.
