Time of past OR future Camino
After 11 Caminos, want to Ruta de la Lana next...
I have to be in Madrid for a reunion around mid-Oct for 3 days. Shame if I don't take the opportunity to walk in Spain.

I can fly in early Oct for a short Camino and the Tunnel or the Aragon (from Jaca to Puente la Reina) way before the event.

Now can't decide which to choose....

The Aragones can be a lonely route, tougher than the Frances with longish distances between albergues.
Give yourself 6 or 7 days. Hope you have a good one - whichever you choose!

Hi, Evan,
Great news that you're heading back to Spain. I wish I could give you an opinion on your question, but I haven't walked either of them. Both are on my (very long) list of future caminos, though. :) I have visited some of the places along the Aragonés, and if you like ancient sites, the church at San Juan de la Peña is unique and awe-inspiring. Jaca´s a very nice town, too.

For info on the Vasco Interior, try jpflavin and anniethenurse. Annie is currently walking in Portugal, but I think Joe is around and walked it last year.

I don't think you'll have much company on either of the routes, but it seems like it would be a tough choice in terms of scenery, infrastructure, etc. Let us know what you decide, would love to hear about whichever one you do walk. Buen camino, Laurie

Evan:

I have only walked the Vasco (Tunnel route). This is a nice walk that starts much gentler than the Frances. The early part of the walk is somewhat pedestrian and Basque. After Besain it becomes a lot more like the Frances. There is an 1100 meter climb from Zegema up to the tunnel. Followed by the large city of Vittoria-Gaitz and the the wine country of Brinas and Haro. Then you connect to the Frances at Santa Domingo de Calzada. This route is sparsely traveled but nice. It is well marked and has some alternate route options. Connect at Burgos versus SDdC. Fatma has taken this route though I have not seen a post recently from her. Anniethenurse has also walked this route. I walked in 2012 and made a few posts. Recommend you go to that thread and give it a read.

I did enjoy the route and have recommended it as a alternative to starting in SJPdP.

Ultreya,
Joe
