Verizon travelpass and editorial buen camino app - data usage

Hi all! I will be walking the Camino Norte/Primitivo in mid-May to the end of June.
I was wondering if any of you have had experience with the Verizon TravelPass and the Editorial Buen Camion app. I have Verizon and was able to use their TravelPass plan for three weeks in Rome a few years back with minimal cost, but I am mostly concerned about how the app will work when I am out walking and need to find my way to an albergue or back to the Camino should I get lost. I have downloaded the maps to use offline, but will I still be using data if I use the app to get back onto the Camino? The Verizon plan allows about 33MB of data per day. That doesn't seem like a lot.

Travelpass worked well for me... I don't know about the app. I used Google maps and downloaded offline sections of the cities as I visited them, and it worked great at finding my way around. I didn't have any limits on either data, text, or calls. It was $10.00 per 24 hours. Verizon sent a text when that 24 hours started, and then again when you were an hour from when the 24 hour period would be up. It only applied when I decided to text or call home, which was only a few times. it worked great for me.


I only downloaded the offline stuff when there was wifi nearby, and the 24 hour access was never initiated by Verizon when using maps offline.

You should be able to use the wifi at one of the many bars along the way.

We used Wi-Fi and called home via Facebook.

Another internet calling and texting option when on wifi is What's App. I used that on a 3 week trip to call home. Need wifi and you have to invite people to be on What's app, but it was great when I had it. Timing when to call home was something to consider.

For our Camino Primitivo in April next year, I will keep track of position using a copy of OziExplorer on my Android S5 Phone. This system worked well for our Camino de Levante/Saureste in 2015. Coupled with an oversized battery, I will be able to get about 11 hours running timefrom the phone. I got my maps and converted them to OziExp format from the Spanish Mapping site (http://centrodedescargas.cnig.es/CentroDescargas/index.jsp) - it has an English version. The routes need setting up (I find that the tracks for most Camino are shown in RidewithGPS on their OSM Outdoors maps). Once the routes are setup, the OZiExplorer app gives a screen showing the map, track and at each change of directioon a compass bearing and a visual arrow showing the turn direction. Be prepared to devote some time to setting all this up. Not that there will be much of a problem navigating. Our experience and what is reported many time here, is that there were plenty of friendly yellow arrows to guide us, provided we kept our wits about us.

Try "here" it works off line and is very accurate, guided me from Lisbon to Santiago without missing a single step, even if you wonder of the track, it will guide you back on track.

Thanks for all of the responses! You guys are awesome! It looks like calling and texting will be fine on the travel pass. My main concern is if using GPS to find my way within the app will trigger data usage. I may have to call Verizon and contact the app folks to be sure. I can control when to call and text, but I can't control when I get lost .

I travel overseas often arrived in BCN last night. and I usually get the $40 per month 100 min 100 txt 100mb of data when I arrive I turn off my cellular data (save the 100mb for emergency only). I do not recommend $10 perday plan it can get expensive on longer trips. Most everyplace use wifi so you can call friends and family using Whats app/skype /FaceTime/Facebook messenger. I would get a map app and down load them for off line use
