Via de la Plata current accomodation update

Here's a list I've been given today just updated. No municipal albergues seem to be open but everything is moving. Still lots available for 12€ a night including double rooms. Andalousia and Extremadura have low incidences of Covid and vaccination is apace.

The group maintaining this map is an association composed of private albergues. (ASOCIACIÓN CAMINOS VÍA DE LA PLATA). It's purpose is to indicate the status of private albergues, which are run by its members. I don't think it is indicative of the status of municipal albergues.

I expect that some municipal and religious albergues will be closed due to the hygiene requirements for accommodation, but those with hospitaleros / hospitaleras in residence might open.

I wonder if this aligns with Gerald Kelly’s updates. I have to check it out. But since my plan is to walk mid October if all is ok, I have some time.

I'm on the Via de la Plata just now. I've not come across any publically run albergues open yet. I doubt that it's for hygene reasons that they're closed. Bars and restaurants have been open for months.

The news that I have seen from the Camino Mozarabe association is that they need to find volunteer hospitaleros before they can open their municipal, donativo albergues. Some unattended albergues were previously visited by volunteers for weekly cleaning, but this does not satisfy the enhanced sanitary regulations for accommodations. Whether this applies on the VDLP, I don't know.

I don't follow how the status of commercially run bars and restaurants relates to this, but perhaps you can elaborate.

I just heard from a pilgrim who passed through Zamora a couple of days ago - The donativo albergue is open with two volunteer hospitaleros (Jose and Ignaci). Hygiene protocols and document checks for arriving pilgrims are, apparently, somewhat onerous but the welcome is warm.

Municipal albergues in smaller towns along the way are closed.

Thanks for posting that information. I’m curious to know if in addition to passport and credential were any other ‘documents’ required?

Yes - Translated from the French: "A rather complicated arrival procedure; Temperature check, COVID documents, mask, cleaning, a thousand instructions. While it's understandable, it feels a little intrusive."

He mentioned "papiers COVID." I can't tell you if that's a vaccination certificate or a PCR test result or something else or all of the above. But for sure, it's not just the usual pilgrim credential and national ID.

Up the road in Montamarta, the albergue is closed but my friend was delighted with the private vivienda rural - Greeted by an elderly host who was waiting with a cold beer and some cake to celebrate the return of pilgrims to the VDLP. Nice room with a view.
