Vino Tinto topples Church!

RENSHAW

Official Camino Vino taster
Time of past OR future Camino
2003 CF Ronces to Santiago
Hospi San Anton 2016.
This is what the Church DID look like at Bercianos Del Real Camino more than 10 years ago.

Note the quaint bodegas just below the Church tower. After a more than average period of rain , the bodegas collapsed taking the entire church down with it.

The evils of drink!

the Paroquial Albergue is Still standing though - hundreds of years old - very nice place to stay.

Had I known those doors were going begging, I would have spirited them away in the night, as they are gorgeous. As it is, my purview is eastward. I do not know Bercianos very well. (It is hard work, being a hermit. Everyone expects you to know stuff.)

So I asked around.
The church is not there any more because it was falling down, and has been for a very long time. It had a fatal structural flaw of some kind and had become an "attractive nuisance," with curious pilgrims climbing dangerously around on it and a great infestation of pigeons and critters. The doors in question were infested with woodworm. And if you take something from a church, even a de-consecrated church, it´s Big Karma for you, pal. (aside from that, around here there is a real respect for the property of others, even the falling-down, abandoned property of others. We have a "fabrica de luz" in our neighborhood with beautiful hydraulic-tile floors, which are disappearing under the collapsing building. No one will touch the place, the firewood-ready timbers, the tiles, the perfectly-useable adobes. If it does not belong to you, you leave it alone. Unless you are a gypsy, it is assumed.)

Thank you for sharing these pics. The big palomar in St. Nicolas disappeared this week, too.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
