Voie de Tours

A guide to speaking Spanish on the Camino - enrich your pilgrim experience.
Thank you for sharing, it brought back many memories of my walk from Paris in the 2004 Holy Year. We didn't see a single pilgrim until we reached the ferry at Blaye - 3 cyclists on their way to Santiago from Belgium.
The next pilgrim we met was a Frenchman in Ostabat. We walked together on an off until we reached St Jean which was packed wall-to-wall with pilgrims. Our French friend wasn't impressed with them calling them 'short haul' pilgrims, only starting in St Jean and not further back in France so only walking half of the Camino Frances.
There were hordes of pilgrims in the Rue de la Citadelle, queuing outside the Pilgrim Office, all in fresh clean clothes, bright new shoes, nervously chattering away. We learned that all 18 beds in the refuge at No 55 as well as Hunnto, and a small gite in d'Uhuart, were taken and almost every other bed in and around St Jean. Our French pilgrim grumbled that some beds should be kept for the 'real' pilgrims who started in Paris, or Le Puy, Vezelay and Arles.
Joy and I decided to continue up the hill to Val Carlos where we stayed in a lovley Casa Rural.
