Walking into Burgos

Camino(s) past & future
July 2018
Hi folks. The long slog into Burgos through the industrial part of town can be avoided according to my guidebook, but I obviously missed an arrow or two because I still ended up on the long road! No great shakes, and a ‘cerveza con limon’ was readily available upon arrival but I just wondered if anybody else found the signage/directions slightly dubious upon entering the outskirts of Burgos by the military airfield?

P.s - I walked in July/August beginning July 7th in SJPDP finishing in Santiago 27 days later and I had the time of my life, I met some of the most incredible people from all over the globe. Thank you all. Buen Camino.

Hola @Dougie, dont worry I made the same mistake; took the left turn at the police barracks ok an walked around the airport, however when I reached the N120 I took the "high road" instead of crossing over and following the river. The yellow arrows point up the road not across the road to the river. 27 days is quite quick!

Yes, I regret going as quick but it’s a learning curve I guess :)

A local directed us to the river path and made sure we all followed. Was a lovely walk into Burgos alongside the river. X

Yes, I missed the river route three times before I found it. Quite complicated. What helped me was the visual guide posted in the forum - see this previous thread, and in particular post #44.

I missed the turn, walked into a village or suburb, found a bus and skipped the industrial area. Remember the bus passing by all kinds of repair shops, garages, all big and ugly. Was lots of pilgrims in the bus. Bus stop in the city was more or less in the centre but still had a nice walk to the old town, cathedral, and albergue.

I am escorting the Roll of Honour (Afghanistan) on Camino France on 20 May from SJPDP
The Roll of Honour details the 41 young Australians who died on Active Service in Afghanistan. In the centenary of the ANZAC’s, the Roll of Honour will be escorted to 41 prominent places and events around the World, laying 41 Poppies at each location.

I did the long walk in Burgos also last year but If i did it again I’d join the plethora of pilgrims on the bus. I was told that the industrial walk is not really considered a Camino walk and I have to say I agree with them

Call me a faux pilgrim, but my husband had warned me of this so we took a taxi for this last part of the day's walk.

I hate to say this, but if you have Mr Brierley with you , it is easy peasy . Since way back when.

But, just to compare, I walked the industrial route once – and, yes, you are all correct, it is not very nice.

However, if you don’t experience the bad, how can you appreciate the good things in life?

Until you take the industrial route you won’t be able to enjoy the river route to its fullest extent... you’re right on track for your next walk into Burgos ;)
Having followed the industrial/highway route (around the North/Western side of the airport) its a pleasure I am not in a hurry to repeat.

Ah, but it’s a bit more than putting the airport fence on your right-hand side. That is where many people go wrong, as when they reach the main road (N-120) in Castanares, they turn right, following the yellow arrows up the road towards Burgos. Don’t follow these yellow arrows. Cross the road. Continue straight ahead, go past the sports ground, and pick up the small path that eventually takes you alongside and then under the freeway to the river. It’s then about a 2kms walk beside the river into Burgos.
