walking sticks on plane

hi everyone,

I have been walking the camino for over 16 days now, but unfortunqtely have to quit now because of knee problems  I am currently staying in the refugio in Castejoretz (after Samblon) and am taking my bus tomorrow to Burgos.

From there, I will take the bus to Valladolid on Friday, and returning Saturday June 2nd.

Does anybody know any cheap hotels in Burgos or Valladolid ? (max 20 euro a night for 1 person) ?

And my most important question is: can you take your backpack with you as hand luggage? And what about the nordic walking sticks ? should I pack them ? or do I simply have to leave them in Spain ?

thanks a lot

I don't know of an airline that will allow poles in the cabin - but it is worth checking - an DG's idea is a good one!

If your pack fits the size criteria, then it can go as hand luggage. I cut the cardboard tube from a roll of fabric (postal tubes do the same job) in half to put my poles in (a friend had a set mangled by an airline), and packed them (with non-essential gels and fluids, and any other nasty offensive weapons like nail clippers) in a cheap holdall. It is a pain, but I didn't want the hassle at the security check.

Maybe the alburgues could run a profitable sideline buying and selling unwanted gear? I came across peregrinos buying new poles in a hiking shop in Leon, and wondered how many discarded pairs there must be along the way?

On flights to and from the US, you can carry walking sticks on the plane. I carried one in my carry-on luggage two years ago. The reasoning is that some people need them to walk.

About your walking sticks, at least in Spain, it depends on if it finishes with a metalic part or not. If so, it can be considered as a weapon and you have to carry with your luggage. If not, you can carry with you as your personal handbag.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
If you have a walking stick, be prepared to ship them back as lugguage.

On my camino frances, the long wooden stick goes back home as accompanied baggage.

On my camino primitivo, the modern metallic walking stick have to be checked in as it is considered a weapon.
