walking with my 13 year old grandaughter

Hi all

I have walk the Camino in 2004 with my son ,walking 240 miles ,his daughter is doing it with me from Ribadeo on the 18th August 2013 ,we are flying into Asturias from uk and staying in Oviedo the first night then catching the feve train to Ribadeo in the morning just wondered if those who walk in August this year have any tips.

We have to get to Santiago by the 30th August to get the flight home and might have to reduce the walking day for her but will look next year after we have done a few more walks in uk.

Any thought would be helpful..

Hi Doug,

10/11 full days of walking from Ribadeo is very doable, there are no real hard ascents or descents and in your face terrain. The longest stretches without places to stop were Mondonedo to Abadin and Miraz to Sabrado dox Monxes, for this latter stretch there was a non advertised little shop which had unusual hours of opening about halfway. However your biggest problem is the amount of other pilgrims who will be walking at that time of year, this far exceeds sleeping capacity, and I have heard of instances of it getting quite fraught in some albergues as people arrived later to find no space. You can overcome this problem by staying in the few private Albergues, they take bookings in advance or only walking short distances and arriving at the other albergues early to take your place in the queue. There is the hotel and pension option, I know Ribadeo, Villalourenza, Mondonedo, Villalba, Sabrado and Boimorto have options of this nature and probably a lot more places that slipped under my radar. Check the Eroski websites for comments on the albergues on the Norte, this often tells you the troubles that people have in finding space at this time of year and also it can give you usefull tips about other options. When I walked this stretch in July 2010 I kept hearing instances of sports halls being opened to pilgrims, Ribadeo was one and Boimorto was the other, so where ever you go always check in with the local Tourist info people they may have heard of something which has not filtered out into public knowledge yet.

In addition to Mike's comments can we suggest that you buy the CSJ guide to the Camino del Norte 'Ruta de la Costa 2 - Villaviciosa to Arzua'. A revised and updated version is due out early next year. This not only gives the route but has suggestions for accomodation - both public and private - including contact telephone numbers. Useful for booking a day ahead where possible and for planning your own stages.

I have been visiting our son in OZ in the outback were little no internet .
I have use the CSJ book when I walked the french way and found it very helpful and light and if there is a updated one coming out rather that the outdated 2004 one that would be great .

I think the route should be ok in the time we have and as I said to her if she get tired we could always get a taxi some where but she is in training it's just making sure she keeps to 10k in her rucksack.

There is another book out The Northern Caminos but it covers to maney routes.
