Way of Saint Paul (Italy)

Apparently there's a new walking pilgrimage route in the planning stages in Syracuse, Italy--the Way of Saint Paul, or Cammino di Sao Paulo. It will lead to Rome, but I don't think they even have a route yet.

Reading a couple of articles (like this one, and this one) using Google Translate, I gather that:

1. A bunch of important people have signed a memorandum of agreement saying they will develop the route.

2. It's inspired by the Camino and the Via Francigena, and those involved want it to become a European Cultural Route

3. It will pass through places that Saint Paul visited, according to tradition.

4. Some prefer the name Paths of Faith, since it's more "open."

Since Syracuse is an island, I wonder if they're planning to then develop a path from the tip of Italy to Rome, or if the getting to Rome part involves climbing on a boat somewhere in Syracuse. The articles don't mention any other areas of Italy.

It'll be interesting to see what happens....

There are quite a few pilgrimage routes in Italy. I was in Sulmona last summer, after doing the Camino, on my way to Castel di Sangro to visit family, and we saw some peregrinos walking. When I returned to Sulmona to get my train back to Rome, I stopped in the visitor's center and the woman there said that they were starting to promote pilgrimage walks in Italy from various sites of religious importance to Rome or other places. There was a nice display in Santiago de Compostela on the Caminos d'Europa, if I remember correctly. It's pretty exciting!

I thought the Way of St Paul was in Turkey, along the Lycean coast...

It would be fun, someday, to wander around Italy on pilgrim trails.

As stated above, there are a number of pilgrim routes in Italy, typical to Rome.

Interestingly a pilgrim who walks to Rome is called a Roma, one who makes it to Jerusalem is called a Palmer, and one who makes it to Santiago is called a nut...

There's one there, too. St. Paul really got around.

Cool! That sounds like a lot of fun!

There are a couple of routes near Assisi with St Francis as a focus that look interesting to me as well. http://www.diquipassofrancesco.it/En/TheWay.html

Paul was taken to Rome as a Roman citizen to be tried there, though the journey was largely by sea. Several years back I saw a wonderful exhibition of photos about places connected with his voyage in St Malo. And several routes have been developed around the life of St Martin of Tours. http://www.saintmartindetours.eu/tourisme/index.html
Europe is a treasure trove of pilgrim walking routes of various kinds. So many routes, so little time!
