2015-2019 walked all or more than half of CF 7 times... CP recently cancelled by Covid 19!
We arrived on Monday in Leon after a very turbulent flight to Madrid. Weather since then has almost been ideal! Today we arrived in Astorga. The Hotel via De La Plata, where we are staying, is a splurge! These pictures are from our third floor room…which surprisingly has two rooms. A living room and a bedroom. huge bathroom, bidet, full bathtub and massages shower. For two, the price was €80 euros (booked ahead). Private Lodgings are pretty full in town.

Spain is reaching 80 percent with first shot vaccinations and around 77 percent with two. Almost everyone in Leon, Hospital de Orbigo, and Astorga is wearing masks. In addition, we were able to get a booster shot before we left. So if not now then when (for us)? We feel quite safe and well, , here, right now, at this time, on the camino..

Tomorrow headed for Rabanal del Camino. We are supposed to get heavy rain. However the first four days were gorgeous.

Glad you are doing well. We leave next Friday for Madrid then Leon. We are taking the train from Madrid to Leon. It leaves later than we wanted but figured we can walk around near Chamartin train station some before our 3 pm train. We arrive in Madrid at 830 am. Did it take you long to go through customs?

@jalluisi No, line…..went fast…very organized. QR Code check, passport control, then vaccine card check. But we came into T1 (UA) No temperature check? Our plane was late. We sat for an extra hour after picking up our-luggage. opposite carousel 9 some outside air was coming in there. Our express train left at 2:40 from Chamartin.

Remember once you leave the terminal you can not reenter without boarding card! Taxi to Chamartin including luggage was €30.

When you get to Chamartin there is a BurgerKing at one end of the station. You must go outside to find it. It has some tables outside where you can sit. The chicken nuggets were actually tasty. We killed another two hours there…stayed outside the entire time. Remember, your luggage has to go through security at Chamartin and will be scanned. So do allow time for it. If you need water, vending machines in station have them. You will descend esculator to tracks. There your ticket will be scanned. No further on board check occurred.

@Marbe2 . Thanks for the information. Did you take the train from the Airport to Chamartin? We wanted to take the 2:40 train but we are arriving on a Saturday and the schedule is different. We are taking the 3:38 pm train (Alvia). Is security down the escalators? Thanks again!

No security is on the main floor of the train station. So you will put your luggage on the screening belt and pick-it up on the other-end of the belt. You are not personally screened just all your belongings. Your luggage, backpacks and fanny packs, etc. Then you walk to your esculator bring your luggage down, get your ticket scanned and get on the train . Tip: get on the train a little early if you have more than a backpack because the luggage racks can fill up quickly.

We did not go by rail from. MAD to Chamartin…. Hopped in a cab. We were tired, it was just easier for us.

@Marbe2. Thanks. Maybe we might take a cab too. Just to make things easier. Thanks for your help. Buen Camino!! We will be in Santiago
If you arrive at T4 you can take the train directly.

Its in the lower level of the terminal. You will see the signs and there is actually a Renfe office in T4 on the level that you enter the train. I don't know your age, but if you have not bought your tickets and you are over 60 you can purchase a Tarjeta Dorada which gives you a discount of about 25% on train tickets for the next year.

Sounds like you are a day behind me. I’m leaving Rabanal today. I had heavy rain on the way here yesterday and more forecast today. I’m staying at La Candela just outside of town. Decent rooms, good enough dinner last night. There are lots of other accommodation options on the village proper which also look nice. Hope you enjoyed León as much as I did

La Candela is very clean. Nice facility. It is on the left side of the road, maybe 100 meters before one enters the main street in Rabanal del Camino.

Thanks for the pics. Hope you have better weather moving forward. Question for you. Are there certain types of masks that are required? We leave on Friday and packing masks. I bought some medical ones and some N95. . Can one wear other materials for masks in Spain? (cotton, etc)

Thanks and Buen Camino!!!

I have seen a variety of masks. Lots of students wearing blue medical type masks. Lots of folks with black masks which appear more substantial then the thin blue ones. I brought enough KN 95s and some some N95s, and a bunch of blue medical masks. But we decided to ship a bag so we have the room. When walking out of towns, I do not have a mask on-on the trails but have one quite handy so I can put it on in about 5 seconds. Sometimes a group is walking by….and chatting loudly, so I slip the mask on until they are about 10 yards away. I wear two masks when in a short cab, or bus ride and an N95 on the train or plane.

Parroquia de Santa Maria Church…lovely church was worth a visit .. one of the churches that is open most of the time in Cacabelos on our way to Villa Franca del Bierzo. Note the little church hidden in the vineyards right past Pieros ? Staying at the Parador in Villa Franca…another splurge! Staying at the Parador in Villafranca..another splurge. Nothing Special…but comfortable matresses!

From Villafranca to Las Herrerias.

We snails left early and had an early lunch in La Portela de Valcarce. The donkey that is usually in the field across from the albergue at La Portela was not there today? Instead two men on horses and a dog on a leash showed up! Some very unique bicycles passed us today as well.
I must admit, for me, the walk from Villafranca up to La Portela de Valcarce is one of my least favorite walks with the endless curving cement road and a cement wall seperating us from the street, with not much maneuvering for the cyclists who take this option, instead of the road. After the first 14km, however, it becomes a lovely walk.

Currently, if you do not have reservations between OCebriero and SdC you may find it difficult to find a place to stay right now. As of this morning, pilgrims were telling us they could not find a room in OCebriero, and there were only a couple of rooms left in Triacastela. Everything is booked up inbetween. On the CF, after Sarria many of the small towns are fully occupied. Accommodations are tight!

We walked up to O cebriero via La Faba this morning. Life is an adventure of new opportunities to learn. . …. So, would one expect to see a cat on the drinking water fountain preening itself soon after dawn? We saw this cute cat sitting on top of the structure in La Faba. My curiosity was aroused! So when we arrived in Fonfria,I read on-line that besides improving appearance, preening helps cats avoid detection by predators by removing odor-causing substances from their fur….. and Preening also functions as part of a cat's cooling process - saliva evaporation works like sweating and helps cats maintain healthy body temperature.

We were also passively greeted by one of the farmhouse dogs… The farm house, right before you arrive at La Escuela bar in La Laguna. Wonder where the rest of the clan were?

We just arrived in Barbadelo. As, @Arn mentioned, the path leaving Sarria….notably from the railroad crossing and ascending the pathway up to the open fields is so much improved, making it a relaxing, smooth, ascent, and allowing us to focus on our surroundings rather than our feet!

Hi, I'm flying to madrid in a little over a week. Spanish travel website regarding vax cards includes "personal ID number" among the mandatory info. This field is blank on my card (and everyone else I've asked). I just have name, birthdate, vaccine info, date of shot, clinic. Do you have this elusive ID # populated? If not, any issue with the vax card check? Thanks.

Portomarin looks pretty full. Lots of folks walking today. Started early, rained till around 9am then turned out to be an ideal day to walk.

I am impressed by the ingenuity of these small restaurants finding ways to provide outdoor dining with shelter.

This morning ,Sunday, we will walk into SdC! What a great experience we have had, even with huge crowds. We stayed near Monte-do Gozo last night. Seems fitting to walk into SdC on a beautiful Sunday morning. Cyclists and walkers seemed to progress in harmony this time.

Compared to yesterday there seems to be an explosion of peregrinos and tourists.

Probably coinciding with the public holiday on Tuesday.

I suspect a lot of people have decided to take a long weekend.

2015-2019 walked all or more than half of CF 7 times... CP recently cancelled by Covid 19!
We walked into town today, Sunday, and it was mobbed. Couldn’t find a seat anywhere in the old city to eat. We actually resorted to a take out order at KFC!!! And we then went into a local park outside the inner city to eat. Don’t think tomorrow will be much different. Hispanic Day is Tuesday and a long weekend for many Spaniards.

If you get out of the old town you may have better luck? Don't know where you are staying, but in the neighborhood between the train station and the old town there are non-Camino shopping, restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores, etc.

Congratulations @Marbe2! How wonderful to walk into Santiago on what looks like a beautiful sunny day. You’re lucky to have a place to stay in Santiago on this puente weekend. ENJOY!!! And I dearly hope you can celebrate with something other than KFC to eat!

Thanks, @peregrina2000! Yes it was a gorgeous day to walk! We are staying about 3/4 of a mile outside the inner City. Not a chance we will venture into the inner city today again. It was wall to wall people….no distancing. I was hoping to go to the Cathedral-today, but alas, it is not to be. We ventured in about a block yesterday afternoon and the crowds were worse than at Semana Santa. Tomorrow, we fly to MAD. We then need to pickup our 1 piece of checked luggage and subsequently find our way back to second floor for Covid testing.

Congratulations, @Marbe2 !
I hope you have an easy journey home.

Thanks,@VNwalking What a wonderful camino! An easy journey would be great! We will take it a step at a time! Hoping for good test results tomorrow at MAD airport. With two shots and a booster, we are not concerned about sickness and we have really tried to distance ourselves….but with antigen testing there is always a tiny chance of a false positive. We will take it as it comes.

Centre is empty this morning or at least it was at 6:30. No apparent queue at the Pilgrim Office but they want you to complete the online form before you get your place.

Thank you…Actually, I have no need to go to the Pilgrim-office…. Not looking for any further compostelas. Just enjoyed a beautiful, renewing outdoor experience, in God’s Cathedral.
