What guidebook do you recommend that contains historical info/what to do/see in the villages?

The camino guidebook I purchased didn't have any historical references to the cities. Just maps and accommodation and basic packing tips. Is there a guidebook that indicates what to look out for / historical landmarks for the camino? Or is this something just to research before the trip?

I'm doing this for spiritual purposes and to learn more about the history of the ancestors that once lived on that land.

When I saw the topic title, I remembered the exact same book that @mspath mentioned above. You can also find very cheap second hand editions in sites such as Abebooks.
I got a copy, and it was very nice to read!

Yes, it’s a wonderful book, but about the Camino Frances, not the Portuguese.

It's a good question. I wanted something similar for the Via de la Plata, but finished up by doing some research on the internet before I started.

Well, I recently ordered Brierley's Portuguese guide as I like the way he does the maps. He covers all of the points you are looking for in a guide. Many folks do not appreciate the spiritual insights he often adds, but I think you may find them beneficial. Otherwise, internet research will be your default, as Kanga mentioned.
