When are San Mateo festivities in Oviedo?

Does anyone know the September 2022 dates for the San Mateo festivities in Oviedo? I’ll begin my Primitivo in September in Oviedo and I am looking to avoid those dates and crowds.

I’ve read it tends to be held the third week of September, but I wasn’t sure if it was the third FULL week of September, or they count those first couple days shared in August, making it a week earlier.

Hi everyone: I wrote an email to theOviedo city government to inquire about dates for September 2022. I received the following note from the Convntion Bureau. Not sure what to think now ….


“Dear Michael,

It has come to our attention that you are visiting Asturias next year.

It will be a great idea to make el Camino Primitivo de Santiago from Oviedo but we can´t confirm the days San Mateo festivities will be held. Usually the city is very crouded two weeks before September,21 st.

I wouldn't worry to much. Yes the city will be busy and in Fiesta mode. Restaurants and bars will be busy, but then Oviedo is a significant city. It's always busy. We are not talking anything like say Pamplona during San Fermin.

We walked into Oviedo during San Mateo, got a room in the first hotel we tried (The Favilla on Calle Uria), had a great evening and walked out the following morning via the Naranco monuments as far as Escamplero.

And what a delightful response from the Bureau. Twice we’ve arrived in Lugo (also on the Primitivo) to find ourselves in the middle of a festival - it was a wonderful bonus!

Hope you have a buen camino, but you should have a good experience in Oviedo. Love, love, love Oviedo, especially during San Mateo. Stop by the Camilo de Blas Bakery on Calle Jovellanos and pick up a couple of Carbayones pastries for your camino! The day of the "Parade of the Americas" will be the problem for you, they close down the main street Calle Uria and of course, this will play a problem with the other streets. Besides that, you will have a wonderful camino going through Oviedo.
