I get asked this a lot, so I add my response here.

Once I see that the iOS version is well received, and I have had the chance to save up some money I will start on the Android version. There is no date, and it might take a while since these apps are expensive to develop.

I had to choose one version (iOS or Android) as my fist version, and after looking at the stats from visitors over the last year, we have more iOS users. That is why that version was made first.

    Thanks!
    Ivar

@ivar How about crowdfunding campaign for Android version?

Giving the option to those that want it to pay for it in advance might speed up the process.

Well, it could be an option. I don't have much experience with it. How would that work?

I have never started it myself but it should be pretty straightforward
    https://www.kickstarter.com/learn?ref=hero
Kickstarter might have some issues in EU but there is an EU alternative that should work on the same principle
    http://www.ulule.com/about/faq/

I'd be happy to research it in greater detail. I'll just need a few days

Hmm... I think I will hold off on the Crowd Funding option since my gut feeling tells me it would be a bad deal for the people that decide to fund it.

I need to charge for the app after it has been developed since the app has some running maintenance costs. I guess the backers could get a free version of the app for backing it, but what else can I give them to compensate for their "donation". I feel more comfortable with just waiting until I have it developed, then the ones that are interested in it can buy it at the running price. Simpler. More fair. I think. :)

    Thanks!

Hmm, majority of the world smartphones runs Android. Future pilgrims will likely have more android devices.
Can we make the app os neutral, i.e runs on a browser.

I know. But this is not the case for forum users. Thus I did the iOS version first.

Lots of people (like myself) donate to crowd funding campaigns just to support the projects, not necessarily to have something special in return. If enough people are will to basically pre-purchase an Android version of the app via crowd-funding to get it developed, I think that would be worth it. This forum is so valuable to people, I think you will find folks willing to pitch in. That is how most new products work anyway. It's not a bad idea - especially since you have the iOS version to show what it would be like/how it would work.

Yes, kickstarter isn't about making money or getting your product, Ivar. People kickstart everything from small business to apps to movies.

Ok, I might have this in mind. Will talk with the programmers in the next few weeks. It might be an option for people who have contributed to get "early access" to the app while it is in development, or something similar. I would need to give those who support the development "something" extra, no?

No - that isn't the idea behind kickstarter...but sometimes you GET something for it. I recently kickstarted a place called Yardbar here in Austin. An off leash, outdoor bar for dogs and their owners. When it opens I get a one year membership and a t shirt. But anyone who joins it once it opens also get a one year membership for the same money. I think I also get a free beer coozie or something. Getting freebies isn't the point, the point is to help kickstart an app or a service or a movie we would like to see in operation. The idea was to take out the banks as middlemen and to get good ideas off the ground for people who would otherwise never have a chance.
I don't know if this app has ads? You might just make it ad free for any contributors. And if it doesn't have ads you should consider ads!

I think I understand... the app does not have ads, but it does cost USD4,99. I could give the app away for "supporters", but I am not sure if the Google App store allows for that. I will keep this in mind though... My gut tell me that I need to give something back to supporters... Will think about this.

Well then you can give them a code that will handle that. But again - it isn't necessary. Maybe you could just buy them a cafecito in Santiago?

Unlike iOS, Android does allow you to distribute installation file (*.apk) directly or through non-Google Play stores like Opera or Getjar.
I agree with @Chacharm , "something extra" isn't strictly necessary in this case,
but if you wish you can always give some souvenir from the Camino Store as a thank you for those who give more to support the project.

Also $4.99 for a crowd funding donation is so inexpensive! most are $25 - to thousands. it's a small risk to throw 5 bucks at a project you like.

And I agree with @Chacharm - no need to give an extra. What they do get is having the app developed much earlier :)

We would certainly be willing to pay the cost up front if it means I get the app for my android by September :)

I developed an iOS app for my company and although I am generally an iOS fan, Apple are frustrating and restrictive in their distribution policies. There is much more freedom and options with Google Play Store, including setting up private invitation-only groups to receive free distribution.

And as already commented, it is basically a question of getting the .apk file out.

    Good luck !

    Ivar, hi

My son in London who develops user apps has noticed the same thing you have: while ios users are good at responding and seem to spend more, there are definitely many more Android users.

Crowdfunding is about getting cash up front so a project can start.

There seem to be two variants:
One in which you keep any cash donated, and the quality/utility of app produced reflects that.
One in which you return any cash donated if the required amount is not raised, and no app is produced.
From your posts above I suspect you would prefer the second of these two.

As you already have a mechanism for handling money (whether donations or sale of publications etc) you could consider using that to receive crowdfunding donations. Adding the "opportunity" for an Android app into the banner for every page might be the only promotional costs you need.

To get started I suspect you only need a very good indication of the costs from the app developer. If they had prepared the ios version they will know what is involved.

And, no, you don't need to give the donors more than the app. As hampshire!tim says in post #18, the benefit to donors is they get the app that might otherwise not be developed.

And as you say, there are ongoing costs, such up to date info on albergues on all(?) camino in Spain and Portugal(?) and app maintenance.

I will have some news on this topic in February/March next year. Have a meeting later today to kick things off... we will be working on it over Christmas.

    Thanks for your ideas!

The concept looks very good, I would donate now to allow you to develop it for Android, in return it would be my contribution to the future of the app, I would be helping me and other pilgrims.
    You have my support

    Hello Ivar,

I don't want to bother you, but am curious as to how the plans are coming for the Android version of your app? I will be walking from Lisbon in late September, hoping to use your app. Thank you for all your hard work and time, so appreciated by many!

There is a web version of the Camino Places app in development here:
    https://www.caminodesantiago.me/camino-places/
...this will (of course) work on any phone. Feel free to look around, it is not ready yet (still work going on). I hope to have it ready soon...

    Thanks,
    Ivar
