We had a nice walk in Zeeland this morning.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Weather forecast for today another 30 Celsius so decided not to drive to another region but to stay home.
A circular walk to the bakery and mostly overcast but very humid.
Bit of everything from our lovely see through iron church to gentle hills.
Poppies, and mountain bike trails that I tackled walking. And the old townhall.
And a display of fine patisserie that I resisted.;)

With some very warm days now, it's so great to walk the shaded paths of the UBC Botanical / Rainforest Garden. A favourite place to spend some hours wandering about.

I'm SO glad to read that, Sabine!!! Yay. You did the right thing.
I'm now in Austria, staying with friends near Neusidel am See - and yesterday we went for a walk for an hour out to the east and looping around back to town. And the joke was on me - I thought I was done with the Camino for this year! But there was a waymark right on the outskirts of town, then a little chapel...and fields of wheat, grapes, and all the poppies.
It has been a very 'soft landing!'

Basically a walk from the carpark to the pubgarden but what views.
Convent of Colen , Cistercienzes abbey with still 2 or 3 nuns. Until some decades ago this was also a working farm and the nuns were known for their hospitality on sunday serving cherrypie. Now this tradition is taken over by laypeople.
At this site also a wooden artwork with beautiful views of the valley.

It´s been hectic for a while, done bits and pieces of walking here and there. I´ve spent some time in my (allotment?) garden plot, it is about 7,5 km walk from home. I have built some walls on my patio, and made a mini "fountain" driven by a submersible pump, a solarpanel and a mc-battery.
And I and my son made a citywalk in Helsingborg, Skåne, last week. My son is a seafarer, he studying as a marine engineer and took the opportunity to board a tankership as cadet for 3 months, so this mum drove him to the boat. From the Tower called Kärnan you can see over to Helsingör on the danish side of the Öresund.

Walking in Pacific Spirit Park today. There are over 50 km of trails within this beautiful park through forest and along the ocean. After several years of walking here, I still find new trails. Today I followed the Admiral and Spanish Trails where I found Spanish Bank Creek - a salmon spawning stream. Also saw charred trees from a forest fire and logger's notches in old growth cedar tree stumps, both from over 100 years ago.

I walked in the forest late this afternoon, absolutly lovely today with floral/woody fragrance, sun shine down throug the trees, a nice temperature to walk in 18° C. The coffebreak today was the best, I saw a small fish (Bleak) jumping in the water and then direct behind a big fish (Pike), the birds chirped and sang as a big chorus from all sides of the lake. Then a good walk back to the car. :)

Circular walk around my village...
Everytime I see those lines from airplanes in the sky I wonder if they fly to Spain...;)
And no digging because of high pressure...

Valkenswaard..now then you were really close to the abbey of Hamont -Achel. If you did not visit it the place : do try it out. They also have some nice waymarked routes.

And yes it was really hot today ...and humid....Going to be some thunder here later on.

Accommodation in the room (bed, breakfast, dinner, lunch - room for two, but if they have enough space then each have their own room - 25 €). Will be 30 degrees Celsius, still very reasonable compared with Spain but too hot for my liking.
So morning walk and luckily bit clouded.
You can see how dry it is here.
Also a pic of an educational tableau about a Roman villa...yes we had the Romans here 2000 years ago.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I had massive day on Saturday. I completed 55kms in the Brisbane Australia, Oxfam Trailwalk in 18hrs and 22 mins. We began at Lake Manchester and finished at Mount Coot-Tha. The event started early in the morning and hiked all through the day and night (0700 am till 0022pm). Initially we were a team of four but dropped to a team of three within the first 25kms due to severe hip and muscular pain.
We packed light. We each had a small pack that consisted of a rain jacket, a fleece, 2.5 litre hydration pack, first aid kit, a phone, 2 changes of socks, a head light, a hat and food. The food per person consisted of 2 x peanut butter sandwiches, 1 x boiled egg, a small bag of fruit and nut trail mix, 2 small baked potatoes, a chocolate bar, an assortment of lollies and electrolyte replacement tablets. There were check points along the way that we could refill our hydration packs.
It had been raining all week so the trails were very muddy, my hiking boots were heavily caked in mud for most of the trail. The creeks were flowing due to all the rain but I managed to keep my feet dry by rock hopping. When the mud got too heavy on my boots I used the water currents to wash of some of the caked on mud. Not that it helped much, no sooner had I turned from the creeks I was back in the mud; at least for a moment there was less muddy weight.
The bush trails were steep, long and tough, as were the descents. And it went on and on for an incredible 55kms, first in daylight, then in the dark, then in the rain. It became clear after the first 25kms it was going to test mental resilience more so than physical strength. The last 10kms were the worst. I felt every step through every nerve end in my body. There were times when I just wanted to stop and lie down on the trail and sleep. My body was screaming STOP every moment of that last 10kms. However, I didn't stop even though I really and truly wanted to and instead I made it to the finish line.
I have to say my Keen hiking boots and my Altus rain jacket were absolutely fabulous. I kept dry and I have no blisters. I was very tired and thirsty on Sunday and today I seem to have miraculously recovered. My muscles were a bit sore today but they have got better throughout the day. It's quite amazing. Can't quite believe it myself. Here's the photo at the finish line.

Wow!! @RedRuby . What an achievement!! You must feel very proud. Congrats to you and your friends .
Thanks so much @SabineP, it was an incredible day. Hasn't really sunk in yet, I think my brain went numb at around the 45kms mark and it hasn't quite come back online. Thanks again.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
Promenade des Bergeronettes in Oteppe. 9k.walk and some nice hills to tackle.
After the 35 degrees Celsius from the last days 21 today felt chilly...;)
Knee felt good.

Wow, good on ya, @RedRuby! Congratulations. You must be still digesting the fact that yes, indeed you did do that.

Me too, but in a much smaller dose. A big day walking UP and then DOWN. 1000 meters elevation in each direction, about 12 kms altogether (at the top it was a flat-ish 2kms or so). I have an uncomfortable relationship to heights, and so now keep looking up there to the near vertical face I somehow traversed to get up to the meadows, thinking "I went up there?? Eeeeeeeeeee!" I have to admit to having moments of thinking, 'Don't look down, don't look down, don't look down..." all the while reminding myself that in this step, I'm fine.
The mind is more dangerous than vertical cliffs.

Sabine, I love it that your knee is good!!

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
Deep respect Lady's for finishing this 55km. hike.
When I remember correctly there is also a 100km. walk to is it .?
Wish you all well,Peter.

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
Wish you well,Peter.
Thank you, Peter. It's definitely not flat here.
I hope your shoulder has improved!

that is a stunning and somewhat scary view.
You can say that again! Fortunately there were cables in the most exposed places.

Oh and I forgot to say - it's the walk from Kandersteg to Jegertosse/Fisialp
If you low country dwellers want a holiday with wrinkly scenery and lots of walking possibilities, this place is paradise. And the Jacobsweg from the lake of Constance to Geneva is not too far away, a bit North of here where it's less dramatically wrinly.

This low country dweller is planning christmas near Kitzbuhel in Austria this year, a mere stones throw away from the Österreichische Jakobsweg. Instead of skiing, I'm hoping for a few days on the trail in winter wonderland...

In September we are going to the Salzburg area to do some mountain walking.
It's bin a few years that we walked in Austria so we looking forward to that.

Wish you well,Peter.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Low country dwellers... I'm still grinning a bit about that description. I like it. I might even incorporate it in my reaction when asked where I am from when abroad. "Hi, I'm Purky, a low country dweller. How are you?"

Thank you @Viranani, and yes I am still digesting it all. It was good to give my 'camino' kit a real test and to walk with a pack for that length of time in wet and muddy conditions was good experience. I'm looking forward to my Camino Frances in late August through to early October and especially doing it with no pressure, in my own time and at my own speed. Being the team leader for the 55km was actually quite stressful in hindsight.
Thanks again.

Thanks @Peter Fransiscus. You are correct, there is a 100km. I have a few friends that completed it and lived to tell the tale. Evidently eating baked potatoes and boiled eggs on the go is the secret. I believe their last 30km was like another 100. It was an amazing achievement.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
We have just been to Scotland to walk the St Cuthbert's Way 100Km over the border mountians to finally walk 3km barefoot across the tidal causeway to the Holy Island of Lidisfarne in Northumberland. We were blessed with beautiful weather and wonderful people!

Yesterday I took a walk on another part of the trail at Lyckebyån. I wonder why I haven´t walked this part before. I started off at the Augerum Church, where the trail passes right through the cemetery.

Enjoying some early summer morning walks along the Fraser River, Sturgeon Banks and the West Dyke Trail near my home. Quiet - hardly anyone on the trail at this time of day. Today lots of animal life ~ herons, eagles, belted galloway cows, turtles ~ a lovely healthy coyote!

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
I walked with some camino buddies along the Camino Vezeley... it's on my doorstep so it seemed a good choice. We walked from Douzillac to St Gery and it's the second time I've done this section... but the route has changed so it was a different walk. And the good news was that on this route I passed 3 open bars and an albergue :)

Went to the Walloon city of Liège.
First I saw was a Camino sign.
Walked 9 k.through the city and found the Church of St James.
Unfortunately it was closed. And it was too warm to wait for reopening so will come back another time.

Walking the Iona Jetty. It stretches 4 km into the Straight of Georgia on the north side of Vancouver International Airport. Always very windy but beautiful views and lots of bird life - especially during migratory months. Large groups of herons fishing in the low tide areas.

Yesterday a walk to and from a local musicfestival.
No Belgian festival is complete if there isn't a frites stall.
And then the moon when we walked back home.

A selection of Camino Jewellery

On Thursday I walked around Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts. I did it the hard way. I first walked to there from home. It wasn't too long of a hike (20 miles, 32 kilometers) compared with a camino stage but I started out hoping to make it all the way back home too. A knee wasn't feeling too good so I called Peg to pick me up with about 10 miles more to go.

Most of the hike was through woods and fields there being enough parks, land trusts, town forests and conservation areas, wildlife refuges, rail trails, private land open to walkers and even Minute Man National Historic Park and a cemetery in which to walk. There were some rural roads and stretches of streets with homes created from summer cottages. The walk to Walden was more fun than the walk around the pond itself and the smaller ponds along the way were prettier.

Walden Pond, of course, is famous because of Henry David Thoreau's book Walden.

Here are some of my pictures:

One of the ponds along the way:

The Minute Man statue at Old North Bridge. I stopped for lunch by the river and heard a lecture on the start of the American War of Independence:

I went out of my way a bit to pass through Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Thoreau, Emerson and other famous authors are buried on this ridge:

In Concord's town forest there was a temporary natural art exhibit on display. Here is a tribute to Thoreau:

A replica of Thoreau's cabin at Walden Pond is near the visitors' center:

Edit: This just in (July 12th). Today is the 200th birthday of author, activist and abolitionist Henry David Thoreau.

Here is an article on how Thoreau's notes on local plants is helping scientists study climate change: http://www.wbur.org/news/2017/07/12/studying-climate-change-walden-pond

Walked round the National Trust estate at Parke today. There had been a woodpecker at work on one of the trees, at the left in the photo with the track. Further on walking across the field we saw a Marbled White butterfly, which actualy stayed around long enough for a photo.

We went to Torcross to meet a friend and walked along the path between the sea and the freshwater 'Slapton Ley'. The road and path go along the top of the bank which is all that separates the sea from the lake. In the photos (sea on the right) it is just possible to see the swans on the ley on the left. The beach was used to practise for the D-day landings and sadly many lost their lives when an E-boat managed to find them and attacked. The tank was recovered a few years ago and set up as a memorial to the 900+ who died there.

Join our full-service guided tour and let us convert you into a Pampered Pilgrim!
On this Belgian national holiday I walked in Engis. Only 8k. but hilly and rocky surface.Took me two hours.
Lots of squared farms in this area and even a huge farm/castle built in 1639. It is now a museum. And 500 metres of dangerous road.

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
I spent last week walking the North Wales Pilgrim's Way with a couple of friends. Mostly camping as cheap accommodation is in short supply. Being contrary types we chose to walk in the reverse direction - spending a day on Bardsey and then walking from the southern end of the Llyn peninsula to the shrine of St Winifride at Holywell.

Very interesting to see that the North Wales Pilgrim’s Way is very easy to connect to Offa's Dyke Path. The two routes together should amount to about 500 kms. My bucket list keeps getting longer...
Any comments on the North Wales Pilgrim's Way?

Walking in the wrong direction meant that it was very difficult to follow the signs. Signposting was often missing or very inconspicuous. There is very little cheap accommodation such as hostels along the way so it would be necessary to camp or use B&B/hotels. The guidebook for the route gives quite detailed directions but the strip maps are very sketchy and inadequate. I would suggest that anyone walking the route should bring OS maps with them and be prepared to choose alternative paths or minor roads to link the key villages along the way where necessary. The route is very varied with some steep hills and narrow and rocky paths though most of it is relatively straightforward walking. Quite a lot on minor roads.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

Five k.around the block. Humid hot weather changed and now some lower temperatures with rain.
I do like it.
Still some time and the harvesting of the pears can begin.

Very funky weather today. Walked to and from garage today ( car inspection ).
Rain in morning so stuck to mainroads.
Afternoon sunny again so took the more rural roads. Reminded me a bit of a day on the Camino with the different roads and weather circumstances.
12k. in total.

Currently on the Pieterpad in Holland with mrs. Purky, having a great time. Six days into the walk and I made a lot of nice photo's.
Unfortunately they are too big in size to upload them from my smartphone. I'll see what I can do when we're back home.
I did however change the settings on my camera for this one: just over the German border in Hoch-Elten.

Went to Tongeren for a leisurely stroll.
Tongeren is known for the famous basilica and has been for centuries a stop for pilgrims to Compostela.
The treasury ( Teseum ) of the basilica is now converted in a beautiful museum but for me the cloister is the most exquisite.
I made pictures but the next video captures it much better than I could.

Looks like a fine museum could while away a nice few hours there no bother. We actually have a full set of vestments in our city museum that were embroidered in Bruges circa 1460.They are said to be the most complete set of medieval vestments in northern Europe. Not only are Belgians great cooks but they are handy at needlework too.

And beer , do not forget the beer. Especially after a long walk.

Finished the Pieterpad in the Netherlands yesterday and today I tried to make a selection of photo's that would do our 445 km trip some justice (we had already walked some stages in the south last year).
