Thank you Sabine! I look forward to seeing everyone's views; this thread is always a treat.
But...but...it's still 2017! We'll see who is capable of delayed gratification. :D
And we can follow around the globe those who get to start the 2018 ball rolling. Just have a look at timeanddate.com

Well our friends from Fiji or Tonga might want to go out for a nightwalk in a couple of hours.
And then our friends in Melbourne might want to follow a bit later. :)

( Or I might have too much time on my hands to think about this....:D )

Wish you all a wonderful New Year .

We had a nice but wet walk yesterday in and around Monschau ( Germany ).

Wishing everyone here a healthy 2018.

Sometimes the road ahead will be well paved and sometimes it will be a bit muddy. The roads will sometimes mislead us....and then quite unexpectedly we seem to find there what we seek...

And when we reach the albergue we will meet and sit together at the table.

It is too cold, it is raining too much... It is very easy to find good excuses. But yesterday was perfect for a short walk in the neighborhood.

Went for a short walk at Misty Mountain this morning, but it was too hot, so we went for a drink instead!

headed out to take train to a spot on the royal Canal and walk back home. Bright but cold and windy. And here is a sample of what I saw en route...the guy having a seat is Brendan Behan, and the quotation on the plaque reads thus:

Sir William Rowan Hamilton
In a flash of genius discovered

Walking the oceanside paths in Victoria today, stopping along the way at the beautiful old Ross Bay Cemetary to visit Emily Carr's gravesite. As we see so frequently on the waymarks along the camino, people treat her grave as a shrine and leave things around and piled on her stone.

Thank you, I will take some time later to read about the woman who has such a poignant inscription on her tomb. Beautiful photos. My sister lives in Dawson Creek, BC, and I always keep an eye and ear out for news of there.

May you all have a very happy and healthy year!
And thank you for the mud, the snow, and all the scenery already.

This morning I went up the road, the usual way, and took pics along the way.
I take all this for granted, but the bike with flowers reminded me how different it all is. So herewith the usual sights of morning around here. The monks walking through the village collecting food for the day, the street vendors selling crispy deep fried stuff for breakfast, the motorcycle taxi guys with their punk hairdos, and today the special hubbub that precedes a holiday which is coming up this week: setting up little pavilions, and preparing for general fun and games. Everyone's watching as they erect a long bamboo pole with a prize on top. It gets heavily greased, and then teams of guys try to get up there to snatch the prize. Somehow, anyhow. Standing on each other's shoulders, you name it.
What you all miss is the noise level, which in places is deafening from loudspeakers people set up outside of those little pavilions.

And I bet you there is no health and safety check on the food pavilions! You are right, the noise is muted, but the atmosphere still comes through. Vibrant colour, very welcome in the cold and dark of winter in this latitude!

Yeah, right. There isn't even the concept of that. :D:confused:
And those gorgeous veggies? Made so in part by copious doses of what they call 'plant medicine.' IOW, all the pesticides that are too toxic to be legal in first-world countries.
the smiley sticker
Funny. I didn't even notice that. I was too transfixed by the faux-chicken look of the guy in the centre.
ill send you one once i get home around March
Yes, please post them here, yaying - we'd love to see them!

Thank you for your kind words, @Theatregal !
What are the white markings / painting on the women's faces? Is it significant to the upcoming holiday?
That's thanaka. It's the ground bark of a tree in the orange family and is ubiquitous, as a sunscreen and because (as my Burmese friends say) it's 'cooling.'
Most everyone wears it, and when kids have to go out in the sun Moms put all sorts of cute patterns on their faces (and the kids do it themselves sometimes, too, with super-cute results).IMG_2913.JPG

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
FYI: Last month in the sister thread to this I posted weather reports from Mount Washington, New Hampshire. It's a great place for a walk but not right now. I should quit posting but it just gets worse.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mount-washington-wind-chill-new-hampshire/

Last Updated Jan 6, 2018 1:18 PM EST

Summit conditions at Mount Washington were so brutally cold Saturday morning the temperature tied for the second coldest on Earth, according to Mount Washington Observatory.

The temperature hit minus 36 degrees Fahrenheit [-38 C] -- with a wind chill of minus 90 (minus 68 degrees Celsius), according to the educational and research institution in New Hampshire.

"We basically just start saying it's stupid cold outside," Mike Carmon, senior meteorologist at Mount Washington Observatory, told The New York Times.

The summit of Mount Washington sits at 6,288 feet [1,917 meters] above sea level.

"We basically just start saying it's stupid cold outside,"

Parental Advisory: Explicit Content.

When it is really cold in Holland, we keep our index finger and thumb about a centimeter apart and say: "It is this cold", with a bit of a mischievous grin. But I don't think we have a gesture for -38 °C with a wind chill of -68 °C. Stupid cold sounds about right...

Still very muddy because of rain in the last days.
I never get enough of the view of our local artwork.
I already posted about it in other threads but here it is again.
It is named Reading between the lines. The Guardian mentioned it as one of the nicest locations to visit.

Beautiful view of the artwork @SabineP - and from the inside as well. The skeletal structure of a church reminds me of a place I visited a couple of years ago in Holland with a Dutch camino friend. The monument to Menno Simons (founder of the Mennonite faith) in Witmarsum which stands on the original site of a 16th century "hidden church or meeting house". I research my Mennonite heritage (on both sides of my family) and my friend took me on a pilgrimage of sorts to Mennonite sites in the north.

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
We've had a period of typical Vancouver winter weather - short dark days, and rainy, with temperatures between 3 to 7 C. However, yesterday began to clear, so I did an 8 km circuit from my house, and came upon this view. It made up for the gloomy week.

I'm afraid I( can't come close to @C clearly for stunning beauty, but Mrs Waka and I went for a gently walk along the Jurassic coast last week, it was a sunny but cold day but we enjoyed getting out the house.

To a Norwegian the name Kattevennen is really funny - it means the cat’s friend in Norwegian! But I suppose it has nothing to do with a cat

Funny!
Did some research. Katte is old Dutch = kaat meaning pond or lake. Ven means fen or marsh.
And indeed the area is wet and muddy.
But I like the Norwegian translation.

A wonderfully diverse walk today near Victoria ~ along the ocean, through a wood, along a creek, through a garden and ending at a castle.

After Marianne's training this morning we had a nice walk beside the river.

Peter, I love your typo. I have a Spanish friend who picked up on the Irish soft t that sounds a bit like th, so your wather is just perfect for that pronunciation! I noticed the water in the Liffey was also very high yesterday. My walk today was simply traipsing back home from a quick visit to a friend in hospital, and nothing to record except real gratitude for being able to walk, and see, and be.

We are just nicely getting walking again after pre-Christmas bugs and bad weather. No new photos yet.

One (annual) plea. When posting photos please keep the size down or better still post as thumbnails. Large files take up too much bandwidth where it is restricted and the page too long to load when there are many large file posts.
Many thanks to those who already do this, it really is helpful.

Well, locally, I had another great workout. I train daily, very early in the morning, with my backpack and my wooden walking pole [the one I bought at Biskarret for 4 or 5 euros], I have all my camino gear in my backpack [upon returning from the camino I washed everything and placed all my gear inside the backpack], feels like walking on the camino! Buena suerte with your workouts, y que la luz de Dios alumbre su camino.

Hiking in East Sooke along the coastal path to see a First Nations petroglyph of a seal. First time I've seen a petroglyph! A wonderful day. Not arrows but very welcome yellow flag markers along a tricky part of the trail.

Been full over here, so I'm catching up.
Just got a good camino prep walk heading up and down ancient staircases.
Wooooowwweeeee, Laurie, Mayan ruins!

Not walking pics, but here's what we got treated to last night (I don't have a good enough camera/lens to capture the red moon - it was pretty special):IMG_8529.JPGIMG_8541.JPGIMG_8545.JPGIMG_8568.JPG

The 8k walk through woodland started dry but after a while the mud took over.
At least it did not rain while walking.
The church is a local basilica and the other edifice is a small chapel.

Really enjoyed this hike on Mount Douglas in Victoria. Drizzly rain and quite misty and fogged in at the top, so no views but it all created a dreamy quiet atmosphere.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
There has been terrible conditions for walking here in New England, mostly ice. We've been taking the dog for short walks but even he wants to head back soon. We had a nice walk day though this morning. We went to a nearby state park to do a loop through the woods around a pond. A light snow had just started to fall. The road was ice and pretty smooth from a recent rain. Peg and I had put ice grippers on our boots but the dog went natural. The poor guy had a heck of a time trying to get up some of the hills. The snow kept him from getting any kind of a grip. His legs were going in all directions and he was sledding downhill on his belly. Toward the end the sun came out and there was blue sky but we still had the snowfall. Sorry, I'd left the smartphone home and there's no pics.

No pictures but wonderful images from your words!!

It took me a while to see the boot! No wonder you don’t feel like cleaning it straight away.
You seem to be having a super muddy winter, Sabine! May you have some glorious sunny days, as well.
Sorry, I'd left the smartphone home and there's no pics.
The words painted the picture very well, Rick!
And @Tulle, feeling happy that you are seeing bougainvillea blossoms, rather than ice. Enjoy the warmth and the walks!

I was out and about yesterday. We went to the village of the teacher here, and made some donations for the medical clinic he started, and for education, and for the village water system. And (yay!!) there was time to walk for a few hours after lunch and appreciate the feeling of stepping back in time.

Love those pics @VNwalking . So like our 2nd home in Thailand. :)

Last week in Queenstown NZ Pat and I did a bit of training to simulate the first section of the CF up to Orisson.
She made it :D:D

Not far (4kms) but very steep! She is Napolean Route ready!

Oops! We got a 'lift' up to this one.:oops::oops:
6,500 feet on a Glacier.

Rob, your pictures of Pat in the Southern Beech forest bring back many happy memories for when the NZ forests were both my workplace and play space! Thank you for sharing the views from above Q'town!
And yes...if she can do that, getting to Orisson and onwards will be no trouble. (BTW, your new avatar is very nice!)

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Our first time in Queenstown. We loved it.
We pop over the 'ditch' for work sometimes.

Someone at the Sydney Pilgrims gathering the other day said I looked nothing like my Avatar
So I changed it.........

I'm so looking forward to that first day up to Orisson and seeing her reaction ! ;);)
I recall finding it very steep............(the last bit)

I've been out and about at glorious Jervis Bay. Great piles of seaweed on the beach near our house, but they started to wash away this morning. Good thing; the smell is interesting after a few days in the hot summer sun!

Gorgeous Jervis Bay!!! I miss Australia so much, especially during this time of the year (I'm in cold rainy Spain atm) I am lucky enough to live in Santiago though, and I am able to visit the Cathedral and walk around Santiago and its old history.

Indeed schools closed around Oviedo.
Albacete minus 15 Celsius.

Finally "some " snow here too.
But nothing compared to Spain or Paris area.
Minus two and a light carpet of drizzle snow.
Forgot to take phone on my morning walk so here a view of my badly kept patio.

My last post mentioned a light snow in a walk in the woods and that I wasn't able to take photos. Well, the next day (Wednesday) there was snow in the forecast so I made sure that the phone would come with me.

In the morning Peg and I took a short drive to walk the dog in a local park before the snow came although the first flakes fell on us there. I've always found it difficult to get good pictures of woods but here's a snapshot:
IMG_20180207_103749.jpg

After lunch the snow had fallen enough for me to try more photography. I debated with myself about taking the dog. He's getting old and I've noticed that on second walks in a day all I have to do is pause and look back and he's all too eager to start running home without me. I took him. We walked from home:
IMG_20180207_134215.jpg

After about fifteen minutes of walking in the suburbs we hit the edge of the woods where there is a dirt road that is the remains of an early 19th century turnpike:
IMG_20180207_140557.jpg

The dog was all too ready to return home at this point but I took him off the leash and he followed me instead of making me try to catch him before he got home.

Here's a small stream that heads to the river:
IMG_20180207_141558.jpg

Shortly afterwards we took a dirt road that was covered with ice and then snow. I put grippers on my boots but they didn't work well because the snow got packed underneath and kept the metal edges from getting to the ice. Unlike the other day, instead of the dog, it was my day to have legs flying everywhere. I did manage to stay upright though. Then we turned into the woods again:
IMG_20180207_142814.jpg

We were now in familiar territory and my old dog became a puppy again, running back and forth along the trail. Walking along I would see three tracks ahead of me in the fresh snow and an occasional glimpse of the dog as he came back to see if I was still coming.

We walked down to the river and then on and up to the area that we had walked earlier in the morning:
IMG_20180207_144524.jpg

The trip back was sloppy though. The snow turned to rain a few hours before it was forecast to. All in all, it was a two hour hike. The dog got a bath to warm him up but crying and lunges showed that he only wanted to get out of the tub. The next day his legs were really sore. He hasn't yet learned that living in the moment can lead to some other moments that you really don't want to live through (but then I guess peregrinos haven't either or else there wouldn't be so many bars along the camino.)

Here's another, older, picture of our dog in a happy snow-dog moment. He also has a mountain-dog personna but he is happiest as swamp-dog.

I pushed myself out the door this morning, as the sun was calling me. Bitter wind, and dodgy forecast. Never mind. Walked along by the river to the train, then along by the sea to a park to buy some veg and beef at the market, then walked home most of the way. Only 10.4km, but very refreshing and met an old acquaintance so that was nice. The photos show the first view of the outlook towards the sea near where I live. Then there is an old bus shelter, and a detail of the artwork inside it. The last one shows the same view as the first one, on the way home. Weather stayed lovely and bright.D59FBCF6-E045-4086-BF2D-3A2011BF1BD3.jpegC48B78F5-1AF8-4183-8F98-C2E3AB18C30F.jpegBCED646F-73E4-4C7A-845A-18CAC67A6969.jpegD59FBCF6-E045-4086-BF2D-3A2011BF1BD3.jpegC48B78F5-1AF8-4183-8F98-C2E3AB18C30F.jpegBCED646F-73E4-4C7A-845A-18CAC67A6969.jpeg61AD21EE-A9BA-4E65-AE4E-ED6D1BB82BF7.jpegD59FBCF6-E045-4086-BF2D-3A2011BF1BD3.jpegC48B78F5-1AF8-4183-8F98-C2E3AB18C30F.jpegBCED646F-73E4-4C7A-845A-18CAC67A6969.jpeg61AD21EE-A9BA-4E65-AE4E-ED6D1BB82BF7.jpeg61AD21EE-A9BA-4E65-AE4E-ED6D1BB82BF7.jpeg

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
I went for a walk yesterday with friends living about two hours north of me in the wilds of Central Ontario. It was almost balmy!
Snowwwwwwwwww!
Lovely, Marylynn!

Here it is the beginning of the hot season and the forest trees are losing their leaves and blooming - they are a riot of color and noise, from the many birds that come for food and nectar.
One huge old relict of the original forest is near the monastery and standing at its base is a neck-straining experience. Quite wonderful!
We walked to a local pagoda and I tried to take a panoramic shot and ended up with surreal, which I actually like a lot. And hidden in there is an elephant, at my 'planetary post' - I was born on a Wednesday so the tusked elephant is my animal in the Burmese zodiac. No red socks, though, sorry....20180215_154610.jpg20180215_160416 - Copy.jpg20180215_160621.jpg20180215_165153.jpg

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Walked a mini-camino (small “c”!) in the San Francisco Bay Area in California! Over 50 miles in a circle trek over the past five days, walking from downtown SF across the Golden Gate Bridge and up Mt Tamalpais. Stayed at a variety of hostels and inns. Most of the people we met were stunned that we were walking a route that is traditionally done by car, but my wife and I loved being outside in the beautiful California sun!

Highlights were seeing a pod of dolphins below the bridge and watching a coyote hunt for lunch a stone’s throw from us. It’s amazibg how quickly the path moved from densely urban to oceanside wilderness - we spent hours on trails without crossing paths with anyone else, even though San Francisco could be seen in the distance. Love being able to do such a hike in our own “backyard”.

Headed to the Camino Aragones and Frances in April, so this was a great shakedown your.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
This morning I was torn in two. I had to look after cooking for our visitor, and I wanted to walk! It was a beautiful morning. So, the best of both worlds. I took the train to the starting point of a circular walk, walked out to see the sea, took some photos, bought some fish and veg, and walked for about an hour, bus and walked home. one photo shows a view against the sun, where I would have loved to be walking. The others show, well me and my shopping trolley, and something interesting from times past..

@Kiwi-family , oooooooohhhhh, thank you! I am delightfully homesick. The tussock and all my plant friends that are in your picture even bring back the smell of the mountains. Taranaki in late summer...the sweeping views and the wind off the Tasman Sea. Glorious.
I love seeing the little specks of people that are in that first pic, dwarfed by the greatness of the mountain. It is no small thing to go as far as you did!
