I walked from a town named Kilcock , back along the Royal Canal towards Dublin. Quite short, just short of 6km. I was trying out my nordic poles, and my knee. The poles are coming back to the shop with me, as they do not hold their length. Perhaps they can advise, or exchange for twist instead of clip locks. I need to repeat this walk many times. It is very easy to do. Walk 15 minutes to train, half an hour on train, walk back for just over an hour, and catch another train back to town. And I saw no sign of the beast whose photo I posted on another thread, but I did see this sign: remember it is just alongside a canal. Then, home, oven on, quickly put together a pizza. Ah!!!

when I made it, it tasted that way too. I have to eat the rest of it later, cold! And the guy in the shop sorted the screw on the poles. He is leaving in 3 weeks time. No new job, just needs space, I think. I didn't promote any camino, but I did recommend a river walk, the one I did last summer. He has a tent and could do it very cheaply that way...he was very touched when I said I would put him in my prayer list, so that he can find what is good for him on the road ahead. That is life: we meet people, fleetingly, and never know the distance a smile or a little word will help them to travel...

Today I was on the Camino. And yes, it was locally here in Ulm, Germany. I live only a few kilometers away from St James Way and I end up on the Way on a daily basis while commuting to work by bike or just when I am running errands. Today my husband and I were out and about to enjoy a few hours of outdoors and kept ending up on the Way quite often. This specific place (where the snap shots are from) is rather awesome. If the sky is clear you can see all the way to the Alps and Switzerland. Your imagination starts flying when you think of the pilgrims from the hundreds of years of gone by looking far into their walk. Today the air was somehow dusty and hazy and no Alps could be seen but the road was still lovely. (PS living so close to Camino and daily seeing the way markers is not necessarily a good thing. I usually try to avoid looking at the Camino signs, because they are calling my name so loud.)IMG_20190323_144104.jpgIMG_20190323_144004(1).jpg

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Well again and , not exactly today as I was pretty tired after this walk ...
Another "Loop" this time
Just 4 out of the 15 to go!
Mind you, we did start these Loops a "few" years ago!
I will put a print of the loops at the end in case anyone from,or visiting London is interested.

This walk was started under the roar of jet engines at Heathrow...but finished along the tranquil Grand Union Canal

As usual got the tube ...this time to the stop before Heathrow......then straight away into the fields and forests...well marked as before
Not long before we were walking by the Grand Union canal......this is 137 miles long and goes from London to Birmingham .....that's an idea maybe for another day!!
It's a beautiful canal with moving and stationary longboats where people live and travel the canals
Came off at one point to get a coffee ...there are also lovely places to eat for walkers and boat day trippers and holidaymakers who enjoy river holidays

As usual we got a bit lost..well actually missed a marker and after a our 20 minutes had to retrace our steps for the turnoff to an adjoining canal and some more lakes that were once gravel pits, and filled with ducks and swans.

The walk...including the retracing of steps was about 22km and took 6hours, including stops. Got the tube home from the end of this Loop and the beginning of the next one!!

Nice swan, Annette! I met his Dutch cousin yesterday, during a walk in the woods on the edge of my hometown. He was fiercely protective of his mate, always between her and passers-by.

Autumn Morning Walk

It’s not even early - well past six
(I overslept)
But darkness still blankets this part of the earth

Hidden crickets trill
And
Moths are lured by streetlights;
Their shadows flutter on the ground
Joining my own
Which stretches and shrinks
Every few steps

It occurs to me
The cicadas are silent
Their summer song has vanished

As dawn breaks
Sparrows stir in branches
A light breeze rustles crisp leaves
A V of ducks squawks far overhead
Cyclists appear, and runners too
The quiet roads start humming and honking
I’m glad to be walking

Probably the last serious dumping of snow for this winter (I hope). 2km from my front door takes me and my vizsla Huba (the only splash of colour in my monochrome world) up 250m from snow 5cm deep to 25cm. The dark clouds over southern Scotland make me fear there may be a little more to come.

@SabineP, you're going to be super fit if you keep that up!
City walk in Breda and around home
The yellow flowers are out...which must mean spring is actually here, or at least around the corner. Though your amazing pic belies that, @alansykes .
The only walking I will do today is in the Bangkok Airport....which is huge, so I can cover some kms...but it is flat, of course.

Another ten k. Early morning.

Having dithered between taking the train with my bike, taking the train without my bike, and travelling back down along the canal, in the end I took the line of least resistance: a lovely walk down towards the river, and when I stopped for a coffee, I met a lovely young couple from San Francisco who came over on Friday from Zurich, returning this afternoon. Number 5 shows a tent, homeless in Dublin. Number 6 shows that the recession is over, the skyline is again dominated by cranes...

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
Today a breezy and cold walk along the Waddenzee, cut short by time and chilliness. Yesterday was warmer, and we went to a wetland to visit an Eagle who's taken up residence there. He wasn't at home, but we sat a playful pair on muskrat instead. And an iconic windmill, which was much easier to include in a photograph.

I forgot to write: the sculpture connects Ireland and Argentina, the bridge is a Calatrava, so connection with Valencia, Spain, and the ferryman is a connection with the past. It marks the spot of a short little ferry crossing from one side of the quays to the other. Very recently, the suspended ferry crossings were reinstated, but from 3 other locations along the quays. I must someday pay the €2 to try it out!
The light: well! make your own connections!

Hi Leibniz,
Looking back in the Loop book, I noted that we did the Cockfosters to Enfield Lock in 2014 and the Enfield Lock to Chigwell loop in 2015 ....
Although both loops were lovely, the Chigwell one was more rural...
I worked in Chingford for years so Enfield was just over the reservoir....a small world!

The no 14 loop from Chigwell passes by Hainault forest and this really is a lovely one...we've probably been walking some of it for years but didn't realise it was the Loop! We just live about a mile from the forest

Will definitely give you a wave if we're in Enfield again .....

On the other hand, if you happen to see 2 odd looking old codgers near your road...that will probably be us!!!
Best wishes
Annette

Well it wasn't exactly today!
Last weekend really

Travelled to Donegal ..north west Ireland to visit a friend
Weather windy and cold but that didn't stop us haring off with the dog along part of The Wild Atlantic Way....and then through the mountains and bogs of the area ....also some beautiful beaches in which Donegal is famous for

Had Coffee. in Killybegs...a fishing village I visited as a child with my parents
Visited some round tower churches ...only one pub though!!!
It really is a beautiful place View attachment 53443View attachment 53444View attachment 53445View attachment 53446View attachment 53447View attachment 53448
Looks beautiful. Donegal is on my list of must visit places as my Ancestors are from there.

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
I was unaware that there was a local trail run going on so I had to find an alternative to go into the main town and bakery.
Grey and humid today.
Walked passed our old town hall that now only is used for official ceremonies.

I haven’t been walking much the last months, but now the snow is gone, the paths are dry and the sun is shining☀️☀️I walked in the neighborhood to look for signs of spring and to admire the mountains from a respectful distance 🙂B5352D7E-064F-4031-B822-CC16DAFE679F.jpeg76372DAA-B6AE-40A9-922F-E7B8D84C008F.jpeg29F66345-5232-4A13-86EB-146170BEFED5.jpeg9F470FF8-50D2-42A7-B863-E1AC1642F3E4.jpeg089CD788-4CF2-47D3-AE32-7E6580CA0662.jpeg

Not many hills in my immediate neighborhood so I’ve been walking up and down six flights of stairs 12 times, a few times a week. It’s hot and boring in the stairwell but I pass the time pretending I’m on the Napoleon Route. On April 26th I will be. 🤗5347C1AC-B719-4FC5-9C27-05624154861A.jpeg

and here it has been bright, and unusually warm, Sabine. Just reporting that in normal everyday walking, today I clocked up 10.3km. better than nothing This is the only pic I took today. Prompted by the question: what is the purpose of moss?

Ha! I asked myself that exact same question today when getting rid of the moss on the flat roof here.

Arrived. View from window of room and of adjacent church. They kept the entrance, and then added a circular structure with a window looking right out at the sea. Very nice to be in. And, it is open all day! tomorrow, the length, and back of the strand...not sure but I was told it is at least 5k, so double that... I will record it and report back. Now, dinner somewhere...

I walked from home to Ulm Minster and from there on followed the camino to Grimmelfingen and then back home. It was about 17K. The weather is fantastic and I what was ever more special is that I had a friend visiting and we walked together. We have both walked Caminos but not together except for a similar one day Camino day in Finland last summer. (Yes, there are some marked Camino routes in Finland, too!)

Couple of days in the south Cotswolds for me -Day 1 Kemble to Marston Meysey along Thames Path (it is amazing to see such a big river at it's source, and as a narrow, shallow crystal-clear stream). Lunch in cricklade with a pint of beer brewed on site and brilliantly named for the Thames Path, Liquid Highway. The after 30.3km it was overnight at Marston Meysey, a great pub The Old Spotted Cow, with b&b. Visited the village Church, of St james of course next morning before setting of on 29.9km return journey via Cirencester and the Monarch's Way trail through the rolling hills before finally arriving back at source of the Thames at Kemble, where I gave my feet a cool soak in the infant Thames. Terrific!

I saw butterflies, bees, a bird of prey, wagtails, a nuthatch, fish in the lake and I saw the signs of wild pigs in the woodsIMG_20190418_111654.jpgIMG_20190418_104010.jpg but luckily didn't meet any.

We have all been out walking.
Here there is very nice weather too. So I had a 6 km walk to say, "Hello Rotterdam!"

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
I have two main training routes here in Brighton England. The coastal path and the South downs.

Here is part of the coastal route:

DSCN0048.JPG

When I was walking there last I came across this

DSCN0064.JPG

It is NOT on a camino, so I have no idea.

However, same day some young lad passed me on a bike and shouted 'Buen Camino'! He was Spanish. It freaked me out until I remembered I still have my shell on my pack!

Gave me goosepimples at the time!

Nice weather in Norway too☀️☀️I had a nice walk not far from home. It is a popular walk for families, there is even a letterbox with children’s books. I think I have posted pictures from this walk before, so I think I must broaden my horizons, perhaps by walking a new camino😉8551A791-A6F7-4716-8BA9-AFC4FB4A8D67.jpeg3FBA193D-CBA2-43D5-AB81-95B57C732DDD.jpeg6689E6B6-DE25-446B-AA37-8064DA788982.jpegFC231F52-42DE-4346-B15E-3A61F73BFAA2.jpeg23458EE4-69D4-43B7-B7E6-4E382B8E6273.jpegD69C4FA4-239E-4DEF-8161-6AB45D5459E0.png

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
Hiked from Pocuvadlo lake up to Sitno which is the highest mountain in these parts - a mere 1007m. Great view and a nice talk with a local geologist till we were distracted by a 7-year-old with no parents in sight who came up and had to be persuaded not to toddle off the cliff. Parents arrived and all was well.

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

€60,-

Hi Davey,
Am I looking at the 7 sisters in the distance?

We're heading there on Monday for 3 nights ...so Sisters, here we come!
We loved the South Downs way from Winchester to Eastbourne a few years ago.
Best wishes
Annette

Warm today, 24 Celsius. Really too hot for this time of the year.
Ten k. round trip with break at my local pub.

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
Yesterday a short 40 minute drive from London to the coastal town of Leigh-on -sea on the Essex coast ....a beautiful sunny day here in Blighty.
Off we took along the estuary, passing Two tree Island ..must be an old name as its now covered in trees!
Quite flat to begin with but with a lovely view towards the hilly 2nd half of the walk. Passed man boats moored on the water.

Skirted the village of Benfleet where we had a coffee
The Saxon battle of Benfleet in 894 probably took place here.

Then upwards and onwards to The Hadleigh Castle Country Park ...a vast area of rolling hills and wonderful views towards the estuary.

Here, we were amazed to learn that it was here that William Booth....born in 1829 and the founder of The Salvation Army ...known as the Sally Army here ....started his work in1865 ..rehabilitating and teaching skills to the poor and unemployed men of London ...over 7000 men passed through this farm ...many emigrating to America
It is now a worldwide organisation
In the uk, they deal mainly with homelessness and addiction rehab programmes.

It was a real treat to learn that they had originated so close to home

We had tea in the cafe before moving on to Hadleigh castle.....built around 1245 ...
A downhill walk took us back to Leigh.
The 14 km took about 4 hours image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg

We were far from home but I suppose this could be considered local since we were in the same country. Peg and I had a five hour walk out and back in Eglin Air Force Base in northern Florida. We had to watch a video to get a camping permit for our night before. I mentioned that it was fine; we've seen these things on bears before. "Oh, not bears; bombs." Yep, a film on what to do if you find an unexploded 3,000 pound bomb on your walk. We didn't see any but this is what we did see on a small section of the long distance Florida Trail.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Seven k.Stopped earlier because there were really alot of tourists in the neighbourhood. Especially people on bikes.
Can not blame them because the area here this time of the year is gorgeous but still...crowded.
So plan b and back home.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

€149,-
Left Pocuvadlo today. I walked from the hotel down to the town with my things in my trusty camino rucksack - about 10km. A beautiful spring walk. IMG_20190422_095626.jpg

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Spent Easter with the family in the High Country, Victoria, Australia.
Did day walks in the Mount Hotham - Dinner Plain area.
Magnificent views, snow gums and great weather. The bush is still recovering after huge bushfires in 2003.
There are also amazing 4WD tracks and camping places up there.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
A few walking days in the sunniest part of the U.K....Eastbourne, Sussex
Whilst not exactly "local" it was a quick 2 hour drive from London
Eastbourne itself is a lovely town, with many Edwardian buildings along the bay ..for miles in fact

There's nothing quiet like an English seaside town...
Bright flowers on the promenade ....The Bandstand.....and fish and chip signs everywhere ..I just love it
Also the Pier jutting out into the sea with the many little tea shops in the middle and timber benches along the sides...and the little craft shops selling more "stuff" that I don't need but which is lovely to look at!!

The South Downs national park stretches from Winchester in the West to Eastbourne in the East and is about 90 miles long.
The walking is generally easy throughout and many people walk the South Downs Way every year.
This time, we just walked the last 2 sections getting there and back each day by bus ...an excellent service in these parts
On the Downs, the views go on for miles with little villages dotted around ...the fields were full of sheep and lambs

Some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in England is here, with views for miles along the coast
Especially the "7 Sisters"

So what can I say about these ladies....
a few are tough enough and the rest fairly gentle girls!

There are no barriers along this coastal area
We had tea at Birling Gap, the lowest part of the walk

Towards the end of the walk lies Beachy Head
At 531 ft.above sea level It's the highest chalk cliff in England
It's also one of the most notorious suicide spots in the world...second only to the Golden Gate Bridge in the US
We saw the Beachy Head Chaplaincy team conducting one of their regular day and evening patrols of the area.
These patrols attempt to locate and stop any potential people who may be contemplating suicide.
Taxi drivers and bar workers in the pub opposite Beachy Head are frequently on the lookout as well
The walk was about 16km which was enough for that day.
I think that we will be back to this area before long ...it is so beautiful.image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg

Testwalk with my full pack and raingear.
After the last weeks of high temperatures this rain is more than needed for the farmland.

I went out at 5pm yesterday for a little jaunt on a local bush track. By the time I got back to the end of it I wasn’t ready for the walk to be nearly over (it’s only 1km from my house)....the sun was long gone but I walked in to the village, expecting to turn left soon after to head home. But I kept on straight down the hill - down to New Lynn where I had to decide which way to head home. Left turn up to Kelston, then not favouring walking through a cemetery I turned left again to head to Glen Eden (“my” local village). Another left would have taken me home, but I decided if it was not yet 8pm I would go straight along to Parr’s Park. Turned out it was 7:59!!! Also turns out Parr’s Park is not 2km from Glen Eden, but more like 3....and then I still had 4km to get home.
2km from home I got a text asking when I would be back!!
I ended up walking 23.6km, and all on a whim. It just felt so good to be walking and I was powering along feeling strong!

Yesterday was the first sunny day in a while and so I could enjoy that light in the cathedral of old beech trees where I am, all in new tender leaf. The Hawthorn is blooming, too.
It is glorious, spring!
