When open great place to have a beer. You can lawfully marry here, use the excellent restaurant to celebrate, overnight at the youth hostel and visit their prehistoric Museum. They have medieval markets here and a old fashioned Christmas market.

Now in the afternoon sun sits just right.

And now the villa rustica. Was built around 120 and destroyed in the 3 rd century.
When it was bulit I like to think about who lived there. Maybe a soldier from the auxiliaries that had done his 25 got his piece of land and his citizenship. He had lived long enough with Romans to appreciate a bath, remnant tubes of a heating system were found, it could have been with an inner court to keep the cattle save a t night or a two story building . He had maybe married a local girl and as a third son on his home farm in the Latium, thought better to stay her in the Gallic province were maybe his friend live down the stream. ( the villa that was not excavated ). In an about 20 km walk he could have come to a township, that even had an eye doctor ( it is now a Museum’s village) He had access to wine and the better goods of the Roman empire, like oil and fine

This is an example of the kind of terrain you'll find over half the Old Way. This is the edge of the Downs at Beachy Head about 10 miles south of the pilgrim route. Chalk with a small covering of clay and grass over. Looks like the strade bianche in Tuscany but not the same.

I found a piece of the Camino.
Today while taking another road home then usually I see this ruins and a church on the mountain.

I pass a cliff and lake never noticed before

ask for directions and drive up the Remigius Mountain.

It is said that that the Franconian king Chlodwig giftet the land to bishop Remigius because he was grateful for the received baptism In 489(?).
so in the 12 century a priory Saint Remy was founded with a castle called St. Michael.

So I park there between ruin and church and what do I see very modest . Yes a yellow shell.


on the Church there is a plague about the Star route with a hope walk for piece.

soon you see one shell I could quickly follow the shells. So I walked the Camino a bit as far my legs would carry me.


When I read history I found another story about Chlodwig's way to share the loot after a successful campaign. No not the kings revenge that a simple warrior could oppose him, but the at that time a simple warrior could successfully demand that the loot is divided by lot and not what one kingly warrior wants.

Nearby alot of cherry trees had to be cut down due to a virus in them. The artist thought it would be a good idea to recycle the wood into this wonderful piece of art.

We have been walking the same old route for the past 2 weeks but went a slightly longer walk today. Still on back roads mostly and keeping to less popular walks.
The spring flowers and trees are lovely (walks over several days) and today the rare breeds were in their field - 2 alpaca and 2 Herdwick sheep. Only one of the latter moved to where I could get a photo.

I am not coy, but google the names and you have the country.
Hint Sabine’s area used to be populated by pretty much the same people here. It read somewhere that they originated close by and by that with Gallo well.

Crowded streets are not so my thing, so I used to walk just before sunrise to hear the birds starting to shout after the silence of the night, maybe something for you Don?

I try to walk along my old routes as if I am scouting it out for a friend. So sorry if I bore you yet with another cherry tree forrest walk.☺

This is in the North of Swedish Lapland where we live. So no long journey to get started on these trips

Today I only went on a short walk, close to the house. Got quite short-breathed due to the stupid virus, even simple walks feel like an expedition at an altitude over 10 000 feet now ;-) ...
But I was lucky enough to find some fresh bear tracks. The traces in the snow reveal that the brown bear spent the last night just 500 metres from my doorstep, resting under a tree.

We have moose, badgers, deer, reindeer, ermines, otters, beavers, you name it ... and lots of feathery wildlife too. Yesterday we had a large white-tailed eagle circling right over the house. Deer sometimes stare right through the window.

So the dogs are used to all that in a way. That does not mean they are not highly interested though. They get excited at times ;-) If I am not careful, they would go even after large moose ... and they know what bear meat tastes like.

Up here we have what we call 8 seasons. The current season is called spring-winter. So we are in late spring-winter or almost spring. We have serious snow 6 months a year ... patches of snow survive far into June even. And here I am not talking about the nearby mountains but the hilly landscape we live in.

Not your typical New England barn but a barn is what it was. Now it is a boarded up, slate roofed, landscape feature and graffiti attractant. I can remember when it was quite stunning with bright white paint. The land used to be owed by a Boston businessman as a gentleman's farm but most was sold to the town. His caretakers were allowed to stay in their house next to the barn and so it was looked after until about 20 years ago. The graffiti started about 10 years ago.

This section of the Old Way is going to throw a few people. As you leave the Pilgrims Rest in post #211 you travel through the town to the forest - the route it well signposted with the [standard] yellow arrows we use here.

A few miles further on the forest suddenly opens up into a popular golf course. You'll need to keep your eyes open for the balls flying past. Ancient routes have to give way to modern uses.

Calling it a pizza would not do italian pizza justice ;-) ... It is more a round, flat bread, already baked, but I needed the fire to thaw it. Attached to it is a slice of local smoked sausage that also needs to be thawed ;-)

My images are virtual at the moment, and today especially is one where a journey is being taken, from Jerusalem to Emmaus, about maybe 11 or so km maybe. In my mind I translate that to wandering up to el Perdón and onwards to Puente la Reina, via Eunate. Why am I walking this route? What will I find?

Now going over the same routes which I record with GPS software. If you plot them it looks like a multicoloured pretzel!

Anyway have now clocked up 300k this month so am I entitled to an e-Compostela? I've passed plenty of churches where I could have got 2 stamps/day if they were open. I've managed to find some places that sell coffee but they looked at me oddly when I asked if they had sellos.

Perhaps @t2andreo could ask for me.

From a hike on the north side of Colorado Springs: Pikes Peak, America's Mountain, looking as majestic as ever.

For those not familiar with Colorado Springs and the surrounding area, Pikes rises approximately 8,000 ft (2,438 meters) above the city. It is a dominating presence.

Over the last 6 years a group of hiking friends and I have walked The 26 mile Los Angeles Marathon Route for the purposes of urban hiking as well as eating in a number of the multi cultural restaurants dotting the route from start to finish. (Eat our way across L.A.). This year, (Pre- Covid 19) we did the same.
This route while relatively flat is usually lined with "curb side cheerleaders" traditionally holding up homemade signs exhorting everything from good cheer to political statements to the absolutely funniest of suggestions and comments. Enjoy the attached photos...

Led 61 pilgrims on a 6.5 mile walk through West Sacramento (California), an area that is considered a suburb and not really walkable. Introduced them to an overlooked river trail, told them of the 1928 Buster Keaton film made there, and shared a glass (or two!) of homemade wine with them at a nearby Portuguese festa grounds.

Pleasant walks are all around us, you just need to open your eyes, ears, and hearts to their possibilities.

On Sunday I took a small hike on a short part (16k) of one of the german pilgrim-paths:
from Magdeburg to Cologne via Koenigslutter, Brunswick, Hildesheim, Corvey (one of the oldest monastries north of the Alps), Hoexter, Paderborn, Cologne.

Drove to Koenigslutter with it's majestic Emperor's Cathedral (founded by Emperor Lothar III, not visitable due to CoVID) and walked through the Elm, a small mountain range near Brunswick, following the shell:

Glad you enjoyed here Yes, it is indescribable. Spring seems to have come closer here finally but no tourists. I walked Legacy trail yesterday (from Banff to Canmore about 28K, took 5 hours one way). Sorry didn't take pictures. Will do next time.

Dogs aren't allowed in some parks. I think that in all the rest they must be on a leash. They may also be restricted to certain trails. In the Smokey Mountains there are only two trails allowed for them and the Appalachian Trail is not one. A park volunteer there told us (in different words) that the rangers turn their blind eye to AT thruhikers with dogs but research this yourself. There are often National Forests and Grasslands and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands nearby with fewer or no dog restrictions.

I have not been posting because my outside corridor hasn't changed. But you can peek through the brick latticework to the garden outside:


And steps away is the slightly wider world, with ripening jackfruit and trees that magically come into bloom overnight, as tiny buds open into golden cascades.


It all looks very exotic, but even now, well before 07.00, it's almost 30°C and feels like it's 3000% humidity. It's threatening rain, but so far the moisture in the air has not coalesced!

Following the very old road from Ostertal with the grave mounts I walk back in time from 100 BC to 300 pass Lichtenberg
along the Glan toward the Kyrburg
then not far visiting one of the mighty Keltic fortress the
Altburg

I walk about an I hour around those old fortifications. There was a upper town and a lower town. There you can visit a Museums village recreating from the post holes cut in the rock of the houses. Close to the Schmidtburg opposit. On Sunday churches and museums will open again.


Usually today we would celebrate old pagan traditions, wear green sprigs
the young would go into the woods start small fires get drunk and find a mate.
And do all kinds of mischiefs.
So we maybe Christians about 1500 years, but we still cling to old ways. We still keep offerings to the gods with Easterfountains decorated wird eggs. scarecrows donations for the field gods, and if you see a Saint Marie’s church on a hill it most likely had superseded a sanctuary of the great goddess. So this years all this in suspense as well.

Ask me on Tuesday! we oldies are to be allowed out from Tuesday. I gather, to a distance of 5km. My question is: on a string, or within a radius? which is longer?
I have not allowed myself to 'miss' being free to go where I choose, because that way is perdition. Now the prospect is near, I am not so sure... since lockdown, the albergue that is home has always been there for quick trips in from and back out to the lane again. Now, with freedom to walk on the public street... I have to keep going. Just like on the first camino, where I learned there is no way back, you have to keep on going on. I do look forward though to taking photos of any and every little detail that I have not 'seen' before on the well trodden path that I frequently take when I only have an hour or so...
This is one of the last ones I took before lockdown. A view out to the sea from the last road bridge across the River Liffey in Dublin.

These photos are from a 7 km walk this morning. On days like this, I can pretend I'm on the meseta.

Banff, Spray River Loop Trail. 13Km. Took 3 hours and half. It was drizzling on and off this morning. Muddy and Icy mostly. Wished I had brought my crampons but dirt didn't bother me so it was OK. Last picture is two female deers, eating their breakfast in the woods..

We took an hour walk in the state park today. We had gorgeous weather and it was a Sunday so the park was pretty busy. We walked in a less used area.

While in the park, but before reaching our parking area, there was a small traffic jam. In fact, a local policeman stopped just before us. There was a turtle crossing the road. Lots of hikers were watching it s.l.o.w.l.y walk across. It wasn't that big but no one wanted to pick it up to speed things up and break up the jam because it was a snapping turtle. Nobody wanted to risk their fingers.

A walk along the river paths of Sea Island today. The wild flowers are really starting to come out now - especially the bright Scotch Broom. A little Killdear hopping about on one leg.

As I walk I find more and more historical points. Here at the so called Prussian Watch.
The Prussian Army with General Blücher stood guard for the retreating French Army.

A couple of days later he fought with Wellesley against Napoleon at Waterloo, which earned him a little plague next to the gift shop in the Battlefield Museum in Waterloo.
Sic transit mundi.

Citywalk this morning. Walked by the old maternity hospital , now completely rebuilt into social housing appartments.
Beautiful view of the park and what were once the ramparts of the city.

Just up on to the higher ground of the farm to see if the grass is ready yet for the ewes and this year's lambs to make their transhumance to the summer pasture. It's been so dry I think we'll have to wait another week or so.

I want to cheat twice. Once, to tell of a gif that is just so hilarious. Will I post a link? No, but if anyone wants it, pm me. It depicts an ultra happy woman dancing through puddles on her first day out to the shops...
My second cheat comes now. I cycled. I was too greedy to cover a distance quickly. First day out! However, I do walk this path regularly under normal circumstances, so in a way it is not a lie. The word FREEDOM! Was ringing in my ears all the while...
I cycled against the wind but sailed home with the wind at my back, as per the Irish blessing. Then after a cup of tea I went out again, but this time I stayed nearer to home. I was rewarded by seeing a short flight made by one of the pair of swans. All within 5km of my home. The soldier is Admiral Brown, founder of the Argentinian Army. The sun was on the plaque with the legend so not good enough to post. A lot of reflection in modern buildings. Interesting reflection: is there anything inside, for the future?
All in all, a lovely morning for the first excursion into post lockdown Dublin for the over 70s.
And huge gratitude for all who are working on the frontline., I passed a testing centre, but there were signs asking people to respect others and not take photos. I was aware though, of the huge emotion that was contained within the tents and the surrounding area. Just beside the statue of Admiral Brown.

Last cheat, as once more I set off on the bike, but I did walk a little bit... I need to work at the idea of a 5km round trip - probably along by one of two canals that begin near me. The thing about the bike is it is so easy to keep distance...
I went to the south side of the bay, and the first photo is looking at the first one from yesterday. The wall is quite a feat of engineering, begun in 1798 - that strikes a bell for a bellicose time on the island of Ireland...

A lady is allowed to change her mind. I am at the moment a bicigrina. It is easier to maintain social distance. Against my will, I will soon have a mask which I will wear. Meantime I have a makeshift protection from others and for others.
I repeated the cycle run I did on Tuesday, but extended it to go out along the North Bull Wall into the bay. The four photos were taken at the same time. Here is a quote from Wikipedia about the statue of Our Lady.:

A 2k walk through the forestry behind my house this morning. The first section is ash and beech under which I have planted blue and white bells and wild garlic, then on to the main forest which is sitka spruce and at the end the clear felled section looking like something post nuclear.

So, where to go to avoid people? That is something I have to pay attention to as I am doubly or trebly vulnerable: age and underlying conditions. I chose a business park near my home, and from there found the entrance into the ferrryport. I have been there before so knew where to go to find a spot for a photo that shows the two walls forming the shipping channel into the port. I saw one man running, a few trucks, lots of poppies surviving against the odds, and some barbed wire.
Speak to me, o barbed wire! Are you an obstacle or a teacher?
Net result: great enjoyment of the blessed sunshine and freedom to move.

How weird you should bring this up. Was up early today to get out before the [lack of] crowds. Today was a pastoral trip through a local forest I'd not been to before.

While travelling through I came across a runner who, a bit like Tinder, swiped/swerved left. Normally people would have stopped for a chat but now everyone looks at you as IF you had a plague. Doesn't look like anyone will be able to enjoy a Camino soon.
