Today, I played tourist.
After 14 years of coming to Switzerland I finally saw the Rheinfall. It was spectacular, exceeding expwctations. Afrer taking in the spectacle, we walked across the railway bridge, then downriver a few kms to a swimming place. Beautiful clear water, quite different than it looks by the time it meets the sea.
Along the way, a familiar waymarker, though well away from the usual Swiss Jacobways. 20220621_153555.jpg 20220621_151907.jpg 20220621_161325.jpg 20220621_164333.jpg

About the only creatures on the Alpharetta Greenway today in the 100F heat were a lost peregrino and a few deer. The young buck has antlers with velvet and didn’t seem interested in the does. None of them fear humans in the park; all grazed within ten feet of the trail.

Got out early this morning before the forecasted heat and humidity can be fully felt today. Can you see what I saw? It was a discovery I couldn't quite make out because it made no sense! This happened when I stepped on a ledge and looked down into a gulch - after all these years of passing by it! I stopped at the information center and asked the park manager who told me that before Frontenac became a state park in 1957 that particular area had actually been a dump!! Who would've known that? Those are some old cars from the 30' and 40's. My plan is to go and investigate in the fall.

From Horton in Ribblesdale, a circular walk via Pen y Ghent, a fell in the Yorkshire Dales at 2,300 ft
A good path to start off then quite rocky, as far as the top
We took the long, indistinct path around by the moor, a mostly desolate area
Then up a steep path to Polvor hill and again through a boggy area and up to Pen y Ghent
We had not met a soul all day and then suddenly it was like Piccadilly Circus at the top!
A beautiful view across the valley and then down through a pretty steep scrambling section.
It’s always easier going up then coming down…for us anyway
A nice path back to the village
The 16km took us about 7 hours mainly because of the terrain 65046F0A-86FB-480F-8E6B-68737A52BDFA.jpeg 8F975ED6-3522-4635-B62E-F0AE967AD214.jpeg 4FB89744-6BD2-4132-98FC-04F5BDD2B2A3.jpeg 363AA316-BDE3-4F0B-8FF4-4103A051DD8C.jpeg 68112669-FEB9-4C97-9C56-FEE3E6B1610E.jpeg 0934781C-0C37-477E-AAEE-653300135D24.jpeg 0934781C-0C37-477E-AAEE-653300135D24.jpeg BDA01E15-6A6D-46F1-8F35-BBB8C890DBD4.jpeg 239D0EBF-4851-4426-B8E8-7FE8F0AC6BED.jpeg 36F5209B-F28B-44B6-BFE8-54A40AAAADC7.jpeg

Went back out yesterday afternoon and hiked 3 miles in the shade, because I heard the forecast for today was going to feel even warmer without a breeze and with high humidity. They were right! It is steamy already at 9:30 am, so I have no desire to go outside at all, unless, it's for a swim:)

I saw a scarlet tanager and a yearling - I think, in the park today. I thought the tanagers had just passed through about three weeks ago and today I spotted this one:)
We had a Scarlet Tanager come through a couple of weeks ago - it stayed in a local park for about 4 days. It caused lots of excitement as it's very rare for our area - in fact the first reported sighting for Vancouver! I've never seen so many birders in one place :)

Beautiful picture.🙂 I've only seen one Scarlet Tanager in my life. It was about ten+ years ago and at first glance I thought it was a male Cardinal, but it was so bright and more orange-red, so I looked it up in a bird book. Interestingly, just the other day, a friend showed us a picture he had taken of one and he normally never sees them either.

We had “a field day” on this walk.
Literally a field day!
I lost count of the number of fields we crossed
From Gargrieve to Malham and back, with a tea stop in Malham. About 22 km
green fields, beautiful scenery and along by the river Aire
Lots of cows and sheep on the way too
This is a section of the Pennine Way

The Pennine Way is a 265 mile (427km) is a national trail through 3 national parks in England and a huge area of outstanding natural beauty
It traverses “the backbone” of England and runs from Edale in the Peak District to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland.

a few days previously , we’d met some runners on another section of the PW
They were racing the whole trail on the Montane Spire race of 265 miles
The winner this year ran it in 71 hours…yikes
A woman ran it in 77 hours…yikes again!
The race is regarded as one of the world’s toughest endurance races
The same route is also covered in winter BC8379F7-A37D-4D78-AE76-C9EE67702D14.jpeg 353BE7EF-6D5D-4C87-8245-5D9412FEB47F.jpeg 97C3BC57-9444-4F0B-A52D-E4AF7DBAB392.jpeg 311290D0-3E94-4B13-9250-2A748EB27959.jpeg A3B6C0F7-D164-4690-A749-F7708BCA2AC2.jpeg F0467977-0FDA-4F4D-AEA8-10F1B87B659B.jpeg E22E79B9-833D-4B85-8E4D-66B88497FD9F.jpeg 8CC78B61-52F0-4446-80EC-262BB6DC9924.jpeg 449E5F94-C1E7-4FBD-9119-89ADA27E8865.jpeg

With my enthusiastic botanist to be, and inquisitive favorite hiking partner at Frontenac State Park - as usual, I was taught by her what wild asparagus looks like;-) and she was thrilled with this turkey egg (maybe?) that I found on the trail a few days ago and stashed in some bushes to show her later.
So much fun on such a perfect day!!!

Early morning along Catbird Slough, passing Pitt Lake to the lookout tower at Grant Narrows. Another new path for me - one discovered because of a Rare Bird Alert! The sighting of a Chestnut-sided Warbler - not usually seen in B.C. I didn't see it but came across groups of birders who had. Lots of other birds to see and hear. The real star today was the scenery. A gorgeous area. On the lake, a very quirky little foot passenger ferry. On the way home, my favourite strawberry stand opened today!

All that we are is the result of what we have thought.
Last Wednesday we walked the 16 km. Long N70.
The N70, is one of the most beautiful walking routes in the Netherlands.

The route is very varied, you walk through beautiful chestnut and lime avenues, past meadows with fresh green grass, along exciting paths and last but not least about ‘8 mountains’.
The high temperature also made the walk extra hard .

Hiking in the same park I go to most of time - close to my home, Frontenac State Park .Today I saw this amazing mushroom and was so lucky to see a beautiful deer resting in the shade under the trees, so I quickly snapped a couple of pictures from different angles and went on my way without alarming it:)

My daughter just told me that the mushroom I found yesterday is called "Chicken of the Woods";-)

Sometimes I do duty in the Camino Information office at the side of St James's church In Dublin. It was a very nice day today, in terms of meeting people and going to the pilgrim blessing that happens at midday on the first Saturday of the month. I took a few photos, and those with masks were fine, but I have blurred one with two soon-to-be pilgrims, to preserve their privacy. A lovely surprise was discovering a repeat offender pilgrim who came in for a new pilgrim passport, and we exchanged Forum names. Those on duty try to welcome anyone who appears at the door, and offer information asked for. Same really as hospitaleros - watch, listen, be there...
The first photo shows two versions of Santiago, brought along by my companion on duty. She brought them from her home in Mexico. She is wearing a totally camino jacket In the second photo. In the little chapel of St James, you can see four pilgrim/volunteers - two of each, and the last one shows Father Eugene who gave a short inspirational talk before blessing each one, and any items brought along, that will travel to Santiago.
The church was built mid 19th century, but the connection with the departure point for Santiago predates that...
I attach links to two websites. One is referring to a book by an archivist, and the other to a company that organises travel for those who wish to use their services.

Edit: I have just ordered the book by the archivist, via Kenny's of Galway. They offer worldwide free postage. I do not belong to the Kenny family, but they are my first port of call when looking for books. I paid less than the price in the article above. I am a sucker for books. I took bags of them to our nearest charity shop the other day so have to fill up the spaces on the bookshelves. 😁

Today on my local trail I mostly picked raspberries so my walk was quite short.😅 I used gallon milk jugs as the handles are easy to carry. I picked so many that I decided to freeze more than half of them for smoothies. After I returned home I headed to the grocery store for vanilla ice cream to go with them for dessert after dinner tonight...yum.😋

That was a big white bird overhead.🙂
A much smaller, grey/brown one that was a whole lot quieter came and perched close to me as I was doing some weeding in the garden. I think that it had some worms in mind but was unfazed by me, being within patting distance until I pulled my phone out to take a photo when it hopped a little further away.

Later on I was walking around the harbour and remembered to take a photo.

@nycwalking, You live in a wonderful area near the sea. The majority of us cannot use the word "coast" when speaking of our local walks.

All interesting pictures from you today. Thanks for sharing.🙂
P.S. I didn't know you were an astronaut.🙃

You’re an astronaut as well.

Together we’ve been on many a Not trips.

Short 6K hike, difficult due to heat & humidity, steepness & footing. Guess that place…clue: the reddish cactus is known as a half moon cactus here.

I assume it's a log if you feel your life isn't in danger.
The first time I saw it I have to admit it gave me pause:) But then, of course, common sense prevailed and I moved on because there are no panthers or black bears in our area - or are there?
Indeed, it is an old rotted tree trunk that fell onto the trunk of that tree just so;)

Less a walk and more an island rock scramble to the Bubbly Pool today, which is only bubbly with the winter currents and tides. The un-regenerated damage from Hurricane Irma in 2017 is still evident in many places, but has made for a driftwood artist’s paradise.

We certainly do! And in all of my backpacking trips over the years on the Superior Hiking Trail I have yet to see one! Which, of course is a good thing;-) Indeed, I do live in the southern part of MN.

Today started cloudy and by the time I came out of the park the sun had peeked out and made it feel hot and steamy. I had never seen a White-Tailed Skimmer dragonfly until today! Though the information I found says it's very common, this was a first for me! I've seen the blue, red, black and other colors but this one caught my eye because it had black and transparent wings with a white body.
Last year there were no berries in the park because they had a burn, but it looks like this year the raspberries and the blackberries are back in abundance:)
Saw this beautiful butterfly - which is relatively common here in MN, and then on my way down I caught sight of this raccoon:) All in all a very fun hiking day!

Lovely photos, and you sent me on a very quick search: what are racoons here for? I found some info on Critter cleanout. There is a lot more info available! The only pet in my house as a child was a budgie. It earned the name cheekie. I wonder why? Six of us taunting it... it soon moved to an aunt's house...

Finally I decided to buy an electric bike ( funny seeing I am often complaining about the tourists here on their bike and not respecting traffic rules).
Fuel prices are getting so expensive that I decided to use the e- bike on certain days to go to work.
On top of that it makes it easier for me to bike to a starting point for a local walk.
Walking boots in the bikebag!

A few years ago, I went on a twenty mile ride on my regular bike with a friend who had just bought an electric. It only held a charge for 15 miles, so we got in a five mile unintended walk too. ☹️

Ai ai...range of my bike is 100k , depending on some factors of course but drive to work is 14k. so should be ok.

Her electric was small and clearly undersized for our ride. Live & learn, I guess. Most of them we see now look like small-medium motorcycles.

Wonderful
Enjoy your new mode of transport Sabine.
The last time I cycled 20 miles I couldn’t sit down for a week, and that was despite having plenty of padding!
I think I will stick to the walking now

A few years ago, my nephew cycled 20,000 km from Alaska to Argentina for the “Irish carers association“ charity who helped care for my mum
He wrote a book about his journey and I couldn’t even manage 20 miles!

Sabine,
Your bike looks great. May you have many good rides before snowfall. Indeed hills do make a difference as I learned 62 years ago (!!) when I went over the Alps at 20.

Hi TrivDad
i got the mileage wrong
it was 27,000 km not 20,000
a mere 7000 mistake!
yes it’s still there
book or kindle
i will send a screenshot
let me know what you think.
I loved reading it and did not want to finish the book
A bit like the Camino I suppose and that’s why I love the Where did you walk thread
We get to see, in photos so many lovely places and experiences

Thanks again, AL, if you care for biking adventure books, there is one by Durvla Murphy entitled Full Tilt, about her solo bike trip from London to Kabul (yes, Afghanistan). As I recall it was in the 1930s. National Geographic rated it high on their Top 100 Adventure Books of all time,
Also, one by a guy from my home town, Athens, GA (woof), Fred Birchmore, who biked around the world after WWII; hthe title is Biking Around the World similar. I think it’s out of print but available.
Not trying to coop the Walking Thread which I love. Just armchair walking/biking today. I love all the Camino threads, but this is my hands down favorite when I’m not on Camino.

I did walk a little bit! I wanted to see how far the works have got on the new cycle path. As yet we have no idea how they will finish the circle, over to the south side of the bay. It is so lovely to have this new option for both cycling and walking, which offers clear skies above, and is removed from the activities of the port, yet ends up at the ferry terminal where there is a cafe. Best on a Sunday when there is minimal traffic.

7k. circular walk around the Hermitage of Vrijhern with our walkinggroup. Gorgeous surroundings. Very peaceful.
Halfway another small chapel with some artwork and a quiet spot for contemplation/ consolation.
Meadow with donkeys.
Afterwards a coffee ( loungechairs with advertisement for a strong beer but way too early for that).

A quick ride on the tube from home to see the
Superbloom at The Tower of London
The moat surrounding the tower has been transformed from a flat lawn into a beautiful habitat for wildlife and a haven for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

20 million seeds were planted in March, so the moat now will be filled with waves of colour from June- September
This is the first year of the transformation
we passed by the tower bridge …and the dining pods….not much change from a fiver I’ll bet!!
then onto the Dickens inn for a cuppa

Thanks for the explanation. I do not have a clue what a non-aging Brit might look like, but this advancing-in-age person (with a UK passport) is thankful for the first new knowledge for today! And what a lovely gesture, to hand over his prize money to that poor man's family.

A leisurely, 5-mile, dog-days-of-summer walk along the Sope Creek and Chattahoochee River trails and their backwaters. Very few runners/walkers/bikers out this afternoon and not a single deer, squirrel, turtle or snake seen, even though the solunar tables predicted a major feeding time during my walk. But the mosquitoes were undeterred.

Along Strand Road - where else! - at low tide. On return, I noticed a ship that perhaps heralds a return to "normal" times. The name intrigued me - Road Scholar (clever!), and at the bow it said Aegean Odyssey. I looked it up and a brief scan of the website tells me yes, it is the beginning of the return of cruise ships. It is rather small in comparison to some of the monsters that used to berth just where the river meets the sea...
