Where to stay in St. Jean Pied de Port?

Hi, we need a bit more information. What is your budget? Private rooms or cheaper dormitories? Will you be up at dawn and out by 8am (hostels), or taking your time and wanting a leisurely breakfast (NOT hostels)? And would you want the communal evening supper experience, or prefer to go out to a smart restaurant?

Excellent choice! We stayed at Gite Makila for two nights (private room) before starting our Camino Frances in Oct last year. The gite is very comfortable, spotless with a really nice breakfast. Basically a few doors from the Pilgrim Office and the Boutique du Pelerin (pilgrim shop). Pancho was a fantastic host..made us feel very welcome and right at home.

I've stayed at Beilari - great experience with a communal dinner, and in a private room at Gite Bidean, which also offered a communal dinner. I recommend both.

Hi Bill,

I highly recommend Beilari albergue—across the way from the Pilgrim office. It’s a family run albergue. What I really like is their warm hospitality, a communal meal in the evening, and an ice-breaking group time where everyone gets to share their enthusiasm, doubts, excitement, fears in a congenial and easy going atmosphere. When you start the walking adventure the following morning you already have friends. I can’t recommend this albergue high enough!! I’ll be back there in April. Can’t wait! PS—MAKE RESERVATIONS!

Beilari is my favorite place to stay in Saint Jean. Great meeting other peregrinos that I will see again and again walking Camino. Love this place!

Hi Bill,

I stayed at Gite de la Porte St Jacques. Karen was the hostess. The overall experience was absolutely fantastic and led the way for my most wonderful Camino. I highly recommend!!

Really nice couple, nice accommodations, and located right at Port St. Jacque, right at the start of the Camino Frances. I would stay there again in a heart beat.

My wife and I have spent the night in St Jean before starting our four caminos. The last two times we've stayed in Hotel Central. Christine is perhaps the best hostess we've ever experienced. She checked us in, allowed us to store our backpacks until our room was available later in the afternoon. One year she dried our clothes after we washed them at a nearby laundry mat. And she was our waitress during dinner. The last two caminos we stayed upstairs in a newly remodeled room that had a small balcony that overlooked the river and mountains. A superb view which we enjoyed while sipping wine. The room was a bit pricey - 115 euros for a private room with private bath, but well worth the expense.

During our second camino, we had a reservation at a private albergue. We showed up early afternoon and found out the doors would not open until 3 pm. It was quite inconvenient to haul our backpacks around the hilly town for a few hours until the albergue opened.

I stayed here - https://www.ultreia64.fr/ - it is very central, they were very nice and it was very comfortable.

I stayed at La Coquille Napoléon, at the start of my Camino. A little outside of town , but the Camino passes right by the front door. The owners were helpful and friendly.
