Why is the statue of a caveman there?

I'm pretty sure that I took the attached photo in Filoval, on my way to Triacastela. It was quite late in the afternoon, early evening, really. It was quite a surprise. Does anybody on the forum know anything about the statue? Such as who carved it, and why?

The 9th edition the Lightfoot Guide will let you complete the journey your way.
Haha. Yes that fella. Raining and blowing a gale as we pilgrims weaved along down the path. Couldn't see well with the winds and rain, turned around the corner of a building, walked a few paces and there he was. I screamed then laughed at myself. A memorable day. I wondered about him as well.

That was almost my reaction. Not a scream, but it was quite a surprise.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
