winter hospitaleros??

undertheopensky

New Member
hola a todos...
so my camino adventure got a bit derailed (voluntarily), and i find myself the hospitalera in the municipal albergue in azofra. this is week two, going in to week three. and it got me thinking, does anyone know of albergues that accept/request hospitaleros for the winter or early spring? i would love to help out again in the future, and winter is more accesible financially, and schedule wise. i know the numbers are a lot smaller, so the need is not so acute. any information would be appreciated.
thanks
peggy

Peggy, you can contact the Spanish Federation's Hospitaleros Voluntarios or, contact the albergues themselves.

Albergues:
1.You can offer your help directly to the refuge - a list can be found at http://www.jacobeo.net/. Be aware that many of these are private businesses that might love to have two weeks´ free labour! The choice is yours, but don’t be exploited.
http://www.jacobeo.net/index.php?modulo=19&pad=37 is a link to the Order of Malta refuge in Cizur Menor, near Pamplona. It is open June through September, and is unique in that volunteers can take turns of only a week if that is all their schedule allows.

2.Leon: The albergue, "Das Animas" (the Souls) in Ambasmestas, Leon is
sponsored by the Friends of The Camino de Santiago in Ambasmestas and is looking for hospitaleros. Those interested in applying may send an email to: das_animas@hotmail.com

3.Volunteer in Galicia: http://www.amigosdelcamino.com Send an email to Bejo at info@amigosdelcamino.com

4. Rabanal: Refugio Gaucelmo - If you would like to be considered as a possible warden, please e-mail the Rabanal Warden’s Coordinator at
r-wardens (at) csj.org.uk. You will have to join the CSJofUK first.
Miraz – Camino Norte: If you are interested in serving as a warden at Miraz, please contact the Miraz wardens´ coordinator at
m-wardens (at) csj.org.uk

6. Red Albergues – use the online form to apply for a post.

I did not see your post back when you wrote it, but it is a good question. There ARE places that need winter hospitaleros... most notably Najera, and on the Via de la Plata Zamora and sometimes Salamanca (although these places are VERY quiet in winter!) You can serve there for extended times if you want.

If you are a federation-trained hospitalero you can request a winter posting by contacting Anai at hosvol. There are lots of other, privately-run places that would likely love a volunteer. You can page through your camino guidebook and find places you enjoyed, and contact them directly.
