I have just finished watching the Laurence Boulting DVD – “Within the Way Without” (Tres en el Camino).
If you can only afford to buy one DVD of the camino then this is the one. For those who don’t know about it, it involves three very different pilgrims who walk in winter, summer and spring and whose stories are intertwined throughout the film. The introduction is by Sir Richard Attenborough and each DVD is signed by Larry Boulting and is numbered. (Mine is number 44).
We show this film at all our CSJ workshops and if you would like to see what the path between St Jean and Roncesvalles looks like; or the albergue in Roncesvalles; or the washing of the feet at the albergue San Nicolas, or the meseta; or Jesus Jato performing a queimada or Tomas the Templar performing a ‘Templarios’ ceremony, then you really must buy this DVD.
I enjoy it more each time I watch it and this time it had me reduced to tears. I can really identify with the summer pilgrim who writes postcards to herself because she feels she might never be the same person again!
Available from the CSJ bookshop – http://www.csj.org.uk

PS: The title is from a Haiku poem written by the spring pilgrim.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Normally, I stay away from emotional films or music. I've tried not to get too emotional about things throughout my life. Maybe that's not what I meant to say. Emotion evoked by good things, happy things...to me those have been what I've sought. Hate is a destructive emotion. Love is on the other side of the spectrum...but how one hates to lose it, for whatever reason.

My Daughter Romi says that I've become too emotional in my later years. But I think what she's really saying is...she sees me visibly emotional more now than ever, especially since Ida's death.

I've never been one for tattoo's, so when my Son Christopher had the SA flag, flanked by two protea's put high on his left arm (in honor of his Mom) I couldn't be too angry. After all he's a guy. But when Romi had our favorite portrait of her Mom put on her back (5x7) I was full of mixed emotions. Both Mother and Daughter are very beautiful.

I've sent for the DVD...maybe it will prepare me better for My Camino. I sure hope the vinotinto helps too!

I too have the video and enjoyed it but some do not realise that it is not a documentary as such but that the protagonists are all actors

It's definitely one of the better Camino films (Saint-Jacques La Mecque is still my favourite), even though its syncretist spirituality is pretty screwed up.

I really felt sorry for the poor Brazilian girl, especially about the consistently poor advice she was given !!
