I commend this site-especially the 'blogs' which includes several from members of this forum. Johnnie walker has some extensive well written blogs.

It is excellent (I think Ivar has had a lot to do with it?)
Reading the history of the camino they say that "The first Holy Year was created in the 15th century. Throughout history the proclamation of every Holy Year has caused floods of pilgrims to seek the Jubilee: the special grace of pardon from sins granted to all the faithful who made the pilgrimage to Santiago in that special year. The first Jubilee Year was convoked in 1425 by Lope de Mendoza, Bishop of Santiago, and probably celebrated in 1428."
I always thought the Holy Years started in the 12th century.

The Archdiocese has records of the Holy Years since 1604:

Holy Years occur every 11, 6, 5, 6 years when the 25th July falls on a Sunday with very rare exceptions eg: wars, special Holy Year when the relics of St James were rediscovered after being lost for over 300 years, etc.

In her book called “Jacobean Pilgrims from England to St. James of Compostella” Constance Storrs writes that the majority of Jacobean pilgrims from England went to Spain by ship and most went in the Holy Years.

“From 1390 to 1399 pilgrims went every year in ships of West Country, south-or-south-east ports, the greatest number in 1395, a Jubilee Holy Year."

She does give a source - would be interesting to see the evidence.

Greetings all. I was scheduled to start in Porto in a few days. Went for a 20 km hike yesterday (my longest thus far) and almost didn’t make it. By the time I got home, I could hardly walk...
I have a confession. I am terrified of - and yes now feel free to laugh - the top bed in bunks with no railing/fence (something to stop you falling out). I've managed to get away with it except...
This is the latest fad for Camino stay out of the wind and woods 🤗.
What are your favorite restaurants, bars, hotels, inns, etc on the Camino Frances NOT in albergues please? Gracias.
We just returned home from watching our second total solar eclipse here in the U.S. in 7 years. Our next is in 20 years. We have become hooked on the magical, mystical, moving unique experience...
Yes, pardon me. So I've just read this cool article about the closing of the Puerta del Perdón in the Monastery of Santo Toribio for the holy year (and it is a very beautiful peurta for sure). It...
