A selection of Camino Jewellery
The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Fold it in half (inside itself), take a sheet of non-woven material like a nappy liner or a dried out wet-wipe and place that in the fold. That way you get two layers of Buff and disposable inner filter. Not N95 but in a pinch . . .
Don't forget to disinfect your Buff with Milton steriliser (or whatever brand name you have in your country).

Be well.

A friend of mine also mentioned this extra cautionary measure...great idea.

Actually that’s a terrific idea. I was reading an article about how vacuum cleaner bags make pretty good masks. Something like 81%. As compared to the N95 masks, which of course are at 95%.

But since you pretty much can’t buy any facemask in the United States at the moment, maybe a piece of vacuum cleaner bag slid underneath the buff in front of your lower face would actually make an OK emergency mask. if you have a tight buff, I think it would hold everything in pretty well. I have a brand new very thin merino wool blend buff that I bought specifically for my spring Camino. I was saving it for next winter, but maybe it’ll shield me from infection. Or at least make me feel better, ha ha.

Not that I really go outside anymore except to the grocery, or occasional walks.

If the Buff is thin then a virus will probably get through it. An N95 mask is not oil resistant (N) and should block particles of 0.3 microns or larger. Covid-19 is between 0.06 microns and 0.14 microns. . . .

But better than nothing.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
If albergues have gassy people near to your bed, a lightly scented buff over the nose may help resolve the odoriferous unpleasantness.
At this point I'd be happy to smell the unpleasant "odors" in the albergues at night. I think we will all appreciate our camino experiences even more once we are able to get back on those trails again one day.

From Madrid to Sydney a week ago .
I’d taped my backpack so that no one could ‘get anything out of it ‘ as I check it. Then realised my couple of masks were inside.

I had with me (in carry on) a super duper buff. The bottom section is fleece and the upper section is the lighter buff fabric. So you can have double.
I used this - plus at one stage - the eye mask o_O😷

It was effective.
When unpacking I decided to try the masks I’d purchased for the job and was glad I’d not used it. They are so light and the air just freely moves in and around. I’m not talking about the really good filtered ones. Most people on the plane had the lightweight ones.

So yes.. I agree

I liked the British souvenir shop advertisement for patriotic masks best. They double as undies so for the ultra light backpacker workable.

I am no medical expert and this is not medical advice. But I think I've read that the airborne virus is carried by droplets. If that is the case, any barrier that blocks the droplets should provide some assistance. And droplet size may be considerably larger than virus size.

Agreed, we just need to hope the droplet doesn't soak through!

Personally I'm with this guy and "Not Going Out"!

Here they are thought of pretty useless unless you work with patients,
just see how many clinical staff in Spain were infected with the masks.
Our leading virologist said they are a courtesy if you are infected to lessen your impact to others.
The direct tropplets and larger ones will be filter by the specialist kind of masks out providing you only wear them about 15 minutes, while the fine mist you will breath in from the side of your mask.So useless.
But I guess it’s more an psychological effect an attempt to control the uncontrollable like bying noodles and toilet paper.
I thing the buff adds fun to your live and positivity and fun adds to your resilience.
There is an interesting study on interval eating, because if gives your body time to “housecleaning” yourself. Maybe still a good idea for lent. And keep your lungs ventilated. Ever tried laugh yoga?
In case this was again the British kind of humor that I did not get I apologize. Well I was a blond in my days after all.
