Kiwi-family

Standing in line at the vege shop yesterday I detected Spanish being spoken behind me. Unexpected in NZ!
I turned and gathered up some courage and then spoke (in English!) with the mother who looked frightened- and her young daughter blurted out “en espanol, Spanish”. Turns out they speak less English than I speak Spanish - but they are going to come round for a meal and we’ll help each other. Perfecto! Hopefully we’ll be able to meet regularly - they don’t have transport and are living in just one room so I’ll pick them up and bring them to my place - that’s as far as we’ve got so far , along with exchanging names, phone numbers and kisses in the car park!
My kids are less than thrilled, but I couldn’t be more delighted!

Last year my wife spent a couple of months in Thailand with family before heading to Japan for a pilgrimage there. She had been working on learning some Japanese when she happened to meet a very kind and helpful Japanese man living in the same Thai city who wanted to improve his English. They met up quite a few times to practice each other's languages. A win-win situation :) I hope you and your new friend have a good time together.

I understand completely. Whenever we hear people speaking Spanish here, and to the embarrassment of my family, I cannot resist saying hello. In Spanish of course! Then a conversation follows.
