The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
It's not on the list but I loved the one at Ruitelan - delicious communal meal, and awoken by beautiful music instead of noisy italians with rustly plastic bags.

The best albergues

For me.-
Cuatro Cantones-BELORADO
En el Camino. BOADILLA DEL CAMINO
Cacabelos
Santo Domingo de la Calzada
Navarrete, etc.......

I loved 'San Saturnino' at VENTOSA.

It's a lovely little old building, beautifully decorated. A very welcoming hospitalero, who woke us at 6am with classical music. And noone was allowed up before 6am, so no rustling plastic bags!

the one in boadilla was such a pleasant surprise, you go from all that agricultural land to this virtual oasis, it was awsome

Which was the one that doubled as a hostel? That was nice too.

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

I´m just back home from the camino. I have done the pilgrimage a few times and will be again ´on tour ´after the first of march this year (Salamanca - Santiago -Cape Finisterre). The best albergue (private) is the very new one 3 km before Sarria in San Mamede. They take 10 Euros per person in a double room with private facilities. You can have breakfast for 3 Euros and evening meal for 8 Euros. It is very friendly and very comfortable there. I never have seen a better place.

It has to be the private albergue in Foncebadon. I originally wanted to stay at the CSJ one but I'd had a fairly easy day of it so opted to walk a further 5k.

Ok, it was €7 a night, but the food was good, the staff there were lovely and it was wonderful to look down onto the meseta from there.

Truly relaxing it was! :)

Hi there,
Are you sure it was in Foncebadon - the abndoned village just before Manjarin?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Favourite Refuges

Rabanal and Gaucelmo - is one and the same refuge intended here, namely the C.S.J. house. I assume so. If not, which of the other two refuges in Rabanal is on the list?

For me, I can not forget my stay at the refuge at Tosantos last September. I can't attempt to describe the experience, I am sure those of you who have stayed there will understand what I am saying. For those of you planning your Camino, make it part of your plans.

I don't believe it; you must be mistaken as that refuge in the church is "the pits", the other one the same and the albergue is surely more than 7 Euros, as I recall. I slept in the church in ruins in September amongst a flock of Germans that slept on the ground. Quite an experience !

San Saturnino - Ventosa. We got lost that day because of construction on the highway and had to walk 30+ km. It was a lovely oasis of calm - very peaceful and quiet with a lovely hospitalero. Breakfast of tostado, jam and great coffee and juice in the morning.
Wonderful and memorable.

yes, San Saturnino/Ventosa. I got lost that day as well, it started raining, I had a terrible pain in the knee... and then I got to this place and all was part of the bigger picture; and the next day I was like another person!

Favorite albergue

What an excellent question.

It made me think hard!

I came to the conclusion that it all had to do with the total experience at a given albergue, the company I was with, and the hospitaleros.

My choice: the albergue at Pereje, on the track between Villafranca del Bierzo - O'Cebreiro.

Buen Camino,

Favorite albergue #2

Of course, there's the albergue at Eunate...

Buen Camino,

I agree with XM above - the greatest part of the refugio experience comes from the company and the hospitaleros. I loved the Gaucelmo the first time I stayed there, yet the second time because of different circumstances I didn't enjoy it at all. And I had the opposite experience in Melide. It was nothing special the first time but loved the second time.

FAO Sillydoll

I can assure you it was in Foncebadon. Through the village and on the left, before the church refugio... The food WAS good, the shop they had sold organic produce and the people were very nice indeed... Was not a tip!!! It was a truly lovely place...

I stayed in Virgen del Camino.
Its outside of Leon and I went there to get my way oot of Leon in the afternoon rather than early next morning.
It was brand new and I was there with only one other pilgrim.
I loved the small town and ate and slept very well.
It is not well known, I believe , but it was just really nice. there was football club next to ita dn the most excellent game of soccer was being played and I talked with many locals.

I also stayed in San Bol....that was very wierd!

I stopped off for a coffee and a visit to the "sh*tting house" at San Bol! The guy there was very nice, but I concur... Weird refuge!

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

I stayed at the gite in Montcuq, France, on my way from Le Puy, and it must rate as the best I have been in. We were greeted with a beer from the man of the house as we arrived, and his wife, a nurse, tended to any blisters we had and gave our legs a massage. Food was wonderful, too. Great experience!

Has anyone stayed at the private one in Astorga? That was cool. Especially the salt water and vinegar foot bath... Just what you want!

Has anyone stayed at an albergue or anywhere where they've washed ur feet? xm 8)
