Hiking Shoes, or Hiking Boots?

The question was:

I have read a lot of conflicting information – some say a good pair of hiking boots is required, especially if you are going in the Winter or Spring. Other sites say that hiking boots are overkill and that hiking shoes, or even a good pair of running shoes are sufficient. What do you think?

  1. Having done the Camino twice–fall and summer–I would say that shoes are better especially in the summer.

  2. I’ve done theCamino in runners (trainers) and I didn’t get any blisters, people with boots tend to get more blisters, though I did have difficulty with my ankle. I had to have additional support. I did get some great advice before I set off, 50% of the path is paved and runners are better for this than boots, its not going to be raining 50% of the time, where boots would be better than runners (in summer time).
    hope this helps!

  3. I used hiking boots and they were great, definitely more stable. I walked in september.
