Not Required and not useful unless you plan to camp out under the stars. All albergues have mats, even if they are full and you have to sleep on the floor.
I took a mat and never unrolled it!!
No, definitely not required. I brought a mat and got rid of it in Zubiri.
Look at the shelf in Casa Paderborn in Pamplona, I counted 7 mats/pads on the shelf in my sleeping area that people have left behind. During the last 150KM to Santiago you see all the student/tour groups carrying one, most who have started from SJPDP have ditched their sleeping mats/pads early on.
