Nervous about walking the Camino de Santiago

The question was:

When, if you were, were you afraid on the camino? How do you deal with it?
Just how much do your feet hurt?
How difficult is it?
How long does it take before it gets easier? A week? Two weeks? Does it ever get easier?

This question hit a nerve in the forum. More than 160 replies and 12 000 views (!). Read all about the fear of walking the Camino de Santiago here.

  1. For me there was no point when I was afraid on the Camino, a feeling of trepidation before I started but I think that’s a normal feeling when your about to embark on the unknown. As regards to feet hurting, I was lucky, I didn’t get any blisters but after 7/8/9 hours of walking each day my feet did ache especially in that final few km. It took about ten days for me to settle into it, I wont say it got easier but I just kinda forgot about my feet, legs and back and was just relished the moment. In those first ten days every day was difficult and everyday I was convinced I was going to bus it to the nearest airport and leave the madness of putting myself through the torture of it, but, I am so glad I didn’t. I have the people I met along the way to partly thank for keeping me going. I finished in the latter half of October (2013) and am longing everyday since to return. So, walk through the pain, lean of your fellow pilgrims and enjoy!

  2. It’s ok to be nervous. You will love it. I truly have not met a single person who did this journey that didn’t think it was fabulous, fun, challenging, hard work, exasperating, memorable, frustrating, and simply, one of the most fantastic experiences in their life. As a single woman in my 50’s, I was really never afraid. I met so many wonderful people along the way and never felt alone – even when I was. You know there are always people on the path with you. I always felt a presence there. Foot and knee problems do happen – you will learn how to deal with that and realize that you have incredible strength inside. You just sort of learn to deal with it and yes, you will have moments when you wonder if you can do it, why am I here, what was I thinking?? 🙂 But in the end, others will encourage you and you will go on. I am always so happy for others who are taking this journey and like Declan…I look forward to when I can return and do this again! Buen Camino friend!
