How early should one get airline tickets?

US to Spain - What Airline?

The question was not exactly this, but related:

June 2013…got tickets already!

I don’t usually post too often, but I just wanted to let everyone know that I found a pretty amazing deal arriving in June and returning in August from Los Angeles. Tickets were only $750 into Dusseldorf, and from there my wife and I are taking a bus to Brussels and then flying through Ryanair to Biarritz, and so forth. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw how inexpensive RT tickets were! I’d been looking at arriving in Madrid or Paris ($1200-1400 RT right now). This helps our budget so much! It’s amazing when things work out so perfectly.

So now I’m walking the Camino for sure! I couldn’t be more excited.

Are reservations really necessary?

Are reservations really necessary?

The question was:

I really, really, really don’t want to book ahead for accommodation, because for me this brings the pilgrimage back to being like any other trip where I have to plan and make phone calls and book accommodation ahead of time. I just want to wake, walk and find somewhere to stay wherever I arrive at the end of my day. And I don’t want to rush to be somewhere by 1pm so that I can secure a bed. I want to walk without timeframes.

Is this feasible at this time of year (May, June, July)?
