Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
Happy New Year! Looking forward to all your local walks 😎
As for me, today only a short walk to prepare a new waterhole on the ice ❄️❄️
I guess my current miniwalks are a bit boring for the forum as it is always close to the cabin.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
I'm going to take off on Alex's pictures of home.

The end of the last of our daily walks in 2022 included a trip from the driveway to the mailbox and then to the front door.

And here is our water supply (though it goes from the river to us through the town's water works). Also taken yesterday but through the living room window.

Note: I made a couple of mistakes with this post. I originally used @Glenshiro's name when I should have used @Martin 888's name. I have since corrected that. Also, I missed the point about the inline image. I'll mention that in another post. My point about resizing still stands though but it is not as critical.

Really nice, been there last time 15 years ago. But the loading times with directly embedded images are killing me a bit ;-)
Alex, your pictures and @Martin 888's pictures have almost the same number of bytes in them (although the last of @Martin 888's does have twice as many). The cure, as @SabsP wrote, is to resize the pictures. The biggest of @Martin 888's pictures is about 3,000 by 4,000. One of yours is about 1,500 by 2,000, a quarter of the size. I resized mine before submitting the smaller copies to about 450 by 800, a decent size for web viewing. Somewhat bothersome but in the editing process I often will also crop the photos.

I was more referring to the images loading directly in the thread as opposed to just having them as attachment with a small preview. The latter I can load on demand, the former is loaded automatically when I scroll on this page. If there are many of the former, a thread becomes unusable for those with limited bandwidth.

Alex, my apologies, I'm not sure where my mind was. I messed up. I did make an editorial remark and corrected some mistakes in my previous post.

About putting images inline you are correct. They can really slow things down. I see @Glenshiro's post with both an inline image and a thumbnail so it looks to me that a mistake has been made. Previously I've found that mistakes similar to this cannot be fixed in edits but maybe @Glenshiro can try.

When I want to insert a photo from my library, I am given the option to select thumbnail. Is that not how it is for others? Inline and all that stuff, too much info for me! I didn't stir out of the house today, so will have to wait for an opportunity to post. It is really a great thread, so thanks Sabine for the idea, and all contributors.

I think Alex has the right idea. Here is how I do it, so I'm not 100% sure if it applies universally...

The photos should be displayed as thumbnails, so that the thread will load efficiently for everyone. Different devices will work differently, so it is hard to give a simple explanation that works for everyone. However, once you have attached or inserted your photo, IF it appears full size in the message box, just click on it and hit the delete button, or backspace over it to wipe it out of the message box. It should still be there as a thumbnail attachment that people can click on, to see the full size image.

Moderators will keep an eye on the thread to remove full-size images.

(If you follow the above procedure, you don't need to worry about the size of your photo, or need to do any complicated re-sizing. In fact, if you shrink the embedded photo by dragging the corners in, it will not be available as a full size image to others.)

Buen Camino, 2023!

New Year´s day...
...there is an open space on the mountain side above the place where I am staying. It is far from the suffocating heat below and the raucous menagerie of wild birds which swoop and scavenge. When the afternoon sun has descended enough to cast a long shadow over the house I follow the twisting road out of the suburb up to a place of peace...

When you post a picture, you can see it in the main message as you are drafting your post. Simply delete that full-size image from the main message box (by hitting the delete key or backspacing it out), and the big image will disappear. However, it will remain as a thumbnail-size attachment. Then people can click on it to view in full size. (If you "re-size" the full size image in the main box by dragging the corners in, it will not be available as a full size image to others.)
This is exactly how it works for me. Both on my laptop and on my phone.

Cooks River in Sydney. I can walk 10 km to Botany Bay in one direction or 10+ k to Darling Harbour in the other.
Also Sydney Coastal walk - I usually walk from Bronte south as far as I feel like.

I've resized a few photos. This is how I post photos - I click "attach files" (at the bottom of my post), pick the photo file I want to use, and then click on "insert thumbnail". Full size photos will show up when the thumbnail is clicked.

Yesterday I went for my usual walk around Culburra Beach on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. A highlight of the walk is Lake Wollumboola, which has beautiful sandbanks. The sandbanks change regularly, depending on the weather events which occasionally open the lake to the sea.

Yesterday was a gorgeous day, with lots of families, local residents and holiday visitors, all making the most of the beach and shallow swimming conditions.

Here’s the lake:

Well, I am always a bit afraid I am simply posting my normal life and this might be not too interesting for others when it gets a bit repetitive. But maybe I underestimate the exoticness-factor of my life situation 😊

Underestimate exoticness of your normal life.

Just a tad.

I am currently in the French speaking part of Switzerland seeing family, and I cm going crazy not walking at all except around the village....without proper clothes....can't wait to get back into my winter attire for hiking...it was so warm the other day here, almost 20°C that people were out in shorts!

Canterbury on New Year's Day. There are a lot of pleasant walks around the city but recent prolonged spells of rain mean most of the routes are waterlogged, so we opted for a walk around the historic centre.

This is The Crooked House which from the pic lives up to its name. Its a bookshop but the door into it can be a bit perplexing. There is a quotation from Dickens’s David Copperfield above the door

Walked along the beach to Blackie Spit, a protected bird migration spot. First sight was of a dark mass on the Spit. A little closer and I could see thousands and thousands of Dunlin, all lined up with precision, facing one direction. Often I've seen them swooping over the water, but never gathered on the land like that.

I was walking along from my house to the apartment of a friend, on the North side of Dublin Bay. Dunlin is the name of the apartment block!
I was just too late for the flight of the geese, but I did catch a swoop of seagulls...

A new year. Looking forward seeing your gorgeous pictures from all over the world.

Thumbnails and resizing the pictures is always nice as not to overload the system here.
Hiked for a week around Iceland in June and then 4 days in Sedona Arizona in October

A regular walk along one side of the Quays and back the other side. On a cold, dark morning I often pause to focus on refugees, inspired by these figures commemorating those who fled Ireland to a Brave New World in hope of a better life.

I participated on these yearly threads for a couple of years, but finally stopped posting and looking at all the wonderful pictures in the middle of last year since I'd already shared the majority of my local walks and several others in the surrounding area.
Today is a new day and I've enjoyed all the new photos and descriptions, even though I have not pushed the Like button as there are so many great pics already!...know they are appreciated and the commentary makes them all "come alive".
We always head south for two months as Snowbirds after Christmas to get away from the cold, bleak weather of the Midwest, so once again we are in Orange Beach on the Gulf Coast of Alabama.
Here is a sampling of my walks, anywhere from 3-5ish miles; some along the beach in front of the condo, but mostly on the boardwalks/trails in the awesome Gulf State Park, across the road on the other side.
I do love scavenging for unbroken 3-dimensional shells; a rarity on this beach. The temps are normally in the 60's-70's; perfect for walking, but not swimming in the water.

Peg and I have also visited and walked around Gulf State Park each April for the last half dozen years. Chris has invited us to come down in January and February but there are two problems. Peg would not like returning to New England still in winter. Also, we camp and it is too chilly down there this time of year for that.

I don't think I mentioned our trip last year so I'm going to cheat a bit with a picture from last year. I take pictures of flat looking shells.

Phil and I live in a townhouse on campus at University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY. It is a prelude to retirement and fits my downsizing to minimalist plan. Walked around the stadium, past the Cowgirl statue, back home with a view of the Laramie range. We live at 7,200 ft just short of 2,200 meters so a nice day without the bitter Wyoming wind is welcome in January.

I walked 12 km today and am completely out of breath and beat as if I had started walking just today. A neighbor says it could be due to a long COVID or simply that we are not used to the ups and downs of temperature.

I see a sunspot in one of your photos. I found an app that 'heals' such things. It is called Snapseed. No doubt there are others that do similar tasks. I only use the 'heal' function, and depending on the surrounding shades, it can be unobtrusive.

I use Snapseed; it's an app bought by Google. Although I use its tools for exposure control, etc. I generally use it only to crop photos and to decrease its size. For example, the original size of my last photo is 2 MB but the size of my uploaded photo that is stored on Ivar's server is less than 360 KB.

A view from a rooftop tower that I have known since 1969. Today was a perfect day to show it to a friend. The tall tree in the first photo was planted by Queen Victoria In 1853, and in the second photo you can see the Pigeon House towers in Dublin Bay. I include a sketch I found online that shows the tower.

Been trying to walk every day this year even if it's just a mile or two - I sure am missing the warmth and sunshine of Spain though - we've had snow, ice and bitingly cold northerly winds here on the islands off the north-west coast of Scotland!

Been trying to walk every day this year even if it's just a mile or two - I sure am missing the warmth and sunshine of Spain though - we've had snow, ice and bitingly cold northerly winds here on the islands off the north-west coast of Scotland!

Scotland is very beautiful!

I was ones in a small town - Stonehaven. There was a Castle on a cliff.
And local pub that served hot salmon soup. Instead of the plate they were using bread. So delicios!
And a pint of stout, of course.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Dunnottar still sits on that cliff and it is a true gem.

Yesterday we went south of the city to meet a friend and walk in the hilly three adjoining golf courses near his home. The previous night's rain was over but it was chilly and the winds encountered in the hills didn't help that. We did get a good view of Boston through. A few small showers started as we finished.

I found five golf balls, Peg found one and Jeff none. We tossed them into some bright white sand traps to help hide them until some unlucky (or unskilled) golfer could recover them. We might have done better keeping them for awhile though. Almost back at Jeff's was a car with the bumper sticker "I rather be driving a Titelist."

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Today is the first time I’ve visited this/these thread(s) for several weeks. It’s so wonderful to see everyone’s pictures and to catch up on your whereabouts. I was seriously considering a return to Spain this year for my ten year camino anniversary, however, a friend - originally from the Czech Rep. - has kindly invited me to go with her to see her old country. So that’s what I’ll be doing; my friend said she wants to go back there one last time.

Please keep posting your pictures.

After the snow and negative temperatures mud of course.
After snow then rain and some warmth we actually encountered some mud yesterday too but mostly wet. The mud was thin on top of firm ground so easy to walk though. Someday the earth will suck me in though and I'll have to send in a photo.

Also, I was picturing someone moving those crates to fill in the artistic chapel.

Please keep posting your pictures.
And send some from Czechia.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
Not so much a walk locally, more a shuffle. ANZ has an alternative name "The Shakie Isles" for a reason.

We just had a bigish earthquake here at 2:02am local time. I was sitting in my lounge thinking about going to bed and my lounge chair started moving.

I have experienced enough of these that I immediately recognised it. It was a decent shake, enough to rattle a few things and it went on for around 20 seconds. The whole house swayed a couple of times.

I looked it up, it took a while for reports to be published but it looks like it was centred around 200klms away and so no primary damage likely in Tamaki Makaurau Auckland but we have just had five months of rain in one week and there are some clifftop houses teetering on the edge and this may have been enough to push them over.

No obvious damage at our house. I will know more in a couple of hours or when I wake up.

Hopefully it is not the pre-shock for a bigger one that will follow. 😁

Gee - I hope all was well when you woke properly and checked Doug. It must be a worry at times living in these zones.
Well, fortunately you don't live in Wellington or the lower Wairarapa. Hope no damage done - likewise from all the flooding!
Yes - floods too in many countries.
Myanmar gets its share of shakes Vira @VNwalking ❤️🙏🙏
