What do you want in an albergue?

A welcome. Everything else is subservient.

Polling Fellow Walkers - Start in SJPP or Pamplona?

SJPP any time it's physically possible, if only for the experience. You may be lucky with the views; conditions change rapidly. Take care, however, with the direction markers.

Top Tips starting from St JeanPied de Port

Be sure to have enough width in your footwear, to allow for your feet to splay sideways. Otherwise, simply go with the flow, and enjoy the many spontaneous moments that will pepper your Camino experience.

What is the one albergue you would avoid?

My experience at Virgen de Guadalupe in 2014 was similar. I did, however, have an excellent communal meal at Albergue Victoria that evening.

If you had an extra day in Bayonne, St. Jean, and Pamplona...

Find the plaque that commemorates the birth of One little thing: find the plaque that commemorates the birth in 1801 of the philosopher and brilliant economist Frédéric Bastiat.

    St. Jean to Burgos

That section is rich in architecture. As ever, listen to your body - there will be days when it says 'enough'! Call in at San Anton Abad in Villafranca Montes de Oca, if only for a meal.

What is the one Albergue that you would say not to miss

My stay in Atria was ruined by a noisy group of Italians partying until midnight. Intrinsically a good albergue, though.

What is the one Albergue that you would say not to miss

Two outstanding albergues: San Anton Abad in Villafranca Montes de Oca, and San Miguel in Hospital de Orbigo. The first gets you hotel facilities for the price of an albergue, and the restaurant is excellent value. San Miguel is welcoming and full of art. Nothing like it. The parroquial in...

The Renovated Albergue San Miguel at Hospital de Orbigo.

This is a favourite albergue of mine. Stayed twice, exactly two years apart, and it is wholly worthy of support from our community.

How the Japan 88 Temple Pilgrimage is Different from The Camino de Santiago

Thanks for an illuminating and comprehensive post.

Equipment for Chubby Girls (perhaps an ongoing guide)

Great thread! Always remember that, three days into the Camino Frances, you will be in Pamplona, and will have ample opportunity to buy anything you find you need. Buen Camino!

Need a recommendation for pilgrim currently in Larrasoana, headed for Cizur Menor tomorrow.

Maribel is one of the Camino's treasures. Her albergue is well-placed for the Alto de Person climb.

    Peregrino Torture Tower

The first time I encountered it, on 2015, a friendly vagrant showed me a way to avoid it. Last year, however, the authorities had comprehensively blocked that short cut.

    Traveling alone.

Most (c. 60%) of my walking has been solo, though typically there have been one or two groups of pilgrims within sight. It is so easy to make friends along The Way - whilst walking, at cafes, and in the albergues. A woman travelling alone need not be afraid. The shared sense of purpose forms a...
