The one thing I should have done before I left for the Camino

Contact and register your (albeit rough) itinerary with your applicable external affairs or embassy/consulate. This lets them know you are in county and how to reach you in the event of a major Event. This saved us a lot of headache in Spain during March 2020… you know - that whole Covid thing.

What was left unused? What can be left behind?

In a mountain hut’s log book, I once read the following: “ The most overrated thing in life is sex and the most underrated is a clear pair of dry socks.” I would never leave my 3rd pair of cozy socks behind…

    Social anxiety

Hello Vetzrah. I am also introverted, tend toward shyness and can come across (in my eyes) as serious. I’ve walked two Caminos now and have met people on each. Over the years I have learned a few tricks that I will share. First was that a smile is often enough. Second was when entering a group...

    Travel from Canada to Porto

Not sure what your departure point is. I flew Air Transat direct from YYZ (Toronto) into Lisbon then train to Porto. Can get flights through Montreal as well.

Photo book or blog documenting your camino

I’ve tried several app based photo book options in the past but found “Popsa” to be super easy, fast and very customizable. It’s a UK based company with printing locations there as well as in Canada and I believe the USA. Quality product and very reputable company to deal with. I used it to...

    Rain pants

I walked the central route in late October last year and we had rain almost every day. I carried and tried rain pants one day for about two hours… hated them. Stuck with my quick dry shorts after that. As Henrythedog said, skin dries much faster than cloth, and feels better while walking than...

    Polarsteps questions

I used my iPhone to take pics this fall on the Portuguese Central and then used Popsa app to create a tabletop book of my journey. Super easy to use, and you can have text as well as pics with or without captions. Highly customizable or the app will do it all for you once you pick the pics. Best...

Is Zpacks Vertice rain jacket worth the investment for ultralight hikers?

I wore one throughout my Camino Portuguese the end of this past October. It worked for rain and wind of which we had lots. I wore it over a merino wool tee shirt and stayed dry and comfortably warm in 17-20* C temps most days. It jammed into a water bottle pocket when not needed, never wet...

Seeking Canadian secular pilgrims who experienced transformation on the Camino for research

Hi. I live in Kitchener, Ontario and completed a Camino in 2015 and my second in October 2022. I would be interested in your research if you still need people. David Joudrey

    Salomon shoes and sizing up

Hi Faith. I have hiked now for nearly 40 years and my Camino was in Sept 2015, and I wore Salomons - a full size larger, and they were narrow (which caused its own problem) but my toes were fine. Everyone’s advice so far is great so I won’t add to or repeat their words of wisdom. Here’s an idea...
