A plus of staying near Atocha is that you are also close to the Reina Sofia museum. I know tourism isn't st the top of your agenda, but a museum visit to see Guernica could enrich your camino experience.
I tried hiking shoes (merrell) but ended up with blisters as I tried to beak them in. So I switched (very happily) to trail running shoes, INNOV-8. Worked well for me.

I was planning to mention this book in my reply to this thread .. I really enjoyed this book. Yes, controversial with some, but very thought provoking in light of current issues, and an important perspective on an important period of Spanish history.
So many options, so little time! I can recommend 'Barcelona' by Robert Hughes (a wonderful history, very engaging), 'Homage to Catalonia' by George Orwell (civil war reporting), and 'In the Night of Time' by Antonia Munoz Molina (a novel set in the time of the civil war, a fascinating read).
Agree .. I used an Arc'Teryx waist pack, 2 pockets, big enough for my small camera and documents, could also be configured to sling over my shoulder. Worth the money.

April-May can be a great time of year. This year, I started April 25 from Logrono and enjoyed moderate weather, moderate crowds, and had a wonderful experience.
