I need to chip in because I was asked a same question and I felt annoyed. Besides the pilgrimage/history/fantastic people of Spain etc. Camino also has bars every 5 km or so and that is what I like about Europe in general. There is always a place to sit down with coffee or beer :)
Buen Camino!

You are never alone on the Camino. I did mine last September, my son decided to come along, but because he is so much younger and faster we only saw each other along the route during the day and stayed in the same albergues at night. It was nice having him there but we each had our own camino...
This is what works for me - light soft walking shoes with good socks. Hiking boots just kill my feet! Walked from Leon to Santiago without one blister!
Buen Camino!
I had a hard time with my gortex lined hiking boots in September of 2012. Ended up buying a pair of Salomon Women's XR Crossmax Neutral walking shoes in Leon. They are super light, dry overnight, and are perfect for my high arch feet.
Camino is not hiking it is walking and heavy hot boots can...
Started in well broken-in hiking boots that got too hot and heavy. Somehow I managed to hurt my ankle just by wearing ankle high boots!
After that I purchased Salomon ortholite in Leon and walked to Santiago. Since then, I got a second pair of Salomons for my next Camino!

From LAX ... I just booked my british airways tickets to Barcelona via London. Figured I will scratch the return flighs from Barcelona and nip to London directly from Santiago. Prices were better than Oribiz or Spanish Airlines :) cheers, Hb
