I agree with you. I suppose if one wants to take it the whole hog then, to fully experience a ‘true’ Pilgrim experience, perhaps, to some, might mean that one should walk bare foot, carry no food or coinage and live off of the kindness of strangers. It is what is in your heart and in you head...
Forget Booking.com and contact the Albergues direct instead. There are usually more beds available than have been allotted to B.Com. Use Buen Camino App, Gronze.com ( open in Google Chrome and it will auto translate to English), Wise Pilgrim App or whatever you choose.
It’s sooooo easy to get caught up in all of this. What if you were 100kg?? Bottom line is, people tend to over pack stuff as they forget that there are actually shops and things where you can buy stuff if you really need it and bins or recycling areas for the things that you realise that you...
We found them invaluable. Even on the flat, they propel you a bit quicker. Tip…… make sure you hold your hands through the straps the right way. Otherwise a flight stumble could easily snap your wrist.
Only on the Meseta did we encounter any problems. Flies, and they were just relentless. I think they were attracted by our sweat. We WILL taking nets next time around. We also encounter a massive swarm of bees. We had to walk through them for 50 yards or so as there was nowhere to hide. Motorway...
Google, Somewhere Along the Way, by the Aussie singer, Dan Mullins. My Wife and I were lucky to spend some time with him and some of his Family on our Camino in 2022. Once that song gets in your head it’ll stay with you. We can’t wait to get back out on The Way.
Hi. Most Albergues will want you out by 08:00 anyway. So that’s probably your latest starting point. You walk The Way, your way. But if you are planning to arrive at your daily destinations between 7-8pm, then do expect quite a number of disappointments for a bed if you are not booking them...
Buy a bottle of water when you set off and use that bottle. Refill it as required. There are plenty of water fountains etc. if you see a sign on a water fountain that says “no potable” then the water is not really for drinking. If the bottle gets damaged, buy another bottle of water and repeat...
It’s too easy just to hand notes over which of course means lots of change. Keep any coin over €1 and ensure you always use them first, where possible. They soon dwindle. As for the rest, there are plenty of charity boxes that will thank you for your small donations. Or a ‘tip, here or there.
No rule of thumb for us. That’s the beauty of it all. It’s your Camino and you do it your way. We stopped whenever the fancy took us. We aimed at 12-15 miles a day if it took 5 hours then fine. If it took 7 or 8, that too was fine. Some people would take ‘days off’! Instead of that, we would...
