    Trekking Poles

I really want to take the poles I bought in SJPDP in June 2022 with me to Ireland but I really do not want to bring a large suitcase that needs to be checked. I pulled up the LEKI website and was able to chat with a person in Customer Service about whether I could reduce the length of the poles...

"It's not about the gear" camino article from an irish jesuit blog

This is the lesson my Camino taught me that I've yet to successfully apply to everyday life. Sigh. But I'll stick with it.

Leaving your pack in an albergue

Ditto to keep all your valuables on your person/in your sight at all times. I found lockers in most the albergues I stayed in, often labeled with the same number as the bed I was assigned. I never had a bed taken over by anyone else. That did happen to me once at a hostel near San Francisco so...

Which apps for family to track me

Similar to PolarSteps, I used Find Penguins and liked it a lot. When I got home, I ordered the book they offer and am delighted with it. I've also used an Apple Watch with Fall Detection. It will summon help if I fall and don't respond to the taps on the watch and it will notify my son as to...

    Be careful with phones.

It seems to me that they are no longer merely phones and that we should be thinking of them as 'life support systems' given that they keep us connected to family, money, emergency help, etc. And we need to protect them with that in mind.

Re: Galego and Spanish on the Camino Frances

I was generally ok with my intermediate Spanish. When trying to speak to my AirBnB hostess in Bilbao, I enlisted the help of a very young man as he sat in a car with his father, who granted permission for him to help me. When the hostess appeared, she and I used Google to talk and that worked!

New Camino Movie -The Way My Way - World Premiere

My personal observations about how Camino movies impact the numbers: I first learned of the Camino when my cousin walked the CF in 2015 at age 65. He introduced me to The Way. I bought a copy and shared it with numerous friends. Several fell asleep or excused themselves and went home. A few...

    Bar Etiquette

While on my Camino in 2022 and afterwards in various places in Ireland, I always bused my cup and plate. Sometimes there was a clear place and sometimes not but in every case, the employees were appreciative.

    Ultra lightweight backpack--worth it?

I'll weigh in as I was 72 on my Camino in 22 that included two weeks on the Norte. My pack is a 26L Deuter and I carried a bit less than 15 pounds. It was such a good fit that it felt a part of me right away and I missed it for several weeks after returning home.

Will I get to see the Botafumiero?

It seems the answer is 'maybe.' When I finished my Camino in July of 2022, I attended Mass three times in three days. At one, there was a large area marked out for a group but it did not swing that day. On my last day in town, as I returned to my space after communion, I was passed by the men...

Silly Stuff that you have Worn on Camino - Pics

Although my pack has a pocket on the side for a water bottle, it was cumbersome to use. Thankfully I realized this before leaving for Europe. I found a net pouch designed to hold a water bottle. It has a string at the top to secure smaller bottles but it held my reusable stainless steel one...

    A stupid washing thing..

Yes. I used a shampoo bar that also worked as laundry soap for handwashing clothes. There are many varieties. I used Chagrin Valley Soap and Salve and on their website they give a good education about bar shampoo as well as recommendations for the various choices that work on various hair types.

Difficulty comparison: Camino del Norte vs. Camino Frances from St. Jean Pied de Port

In addition to that mentioned already, I found the terrain to be rockier in places. I recall rocks that jutted upwards that scarcely left room for my whole foot to be flat on the ground. Hiking poles were critical for me to remain upright. There were also some short but steep inclines with...

Lost & Found Found Bag in Redondela: Valuables, Shoes, and Clothes

Had that been my bag, I would be grateful to know where it had been all the time it was lost, which was with only one person. Thank you for your efforts.
