Any risk of walking without insoles?

Hydrocolloid Dressings, like Compeed, work extremely well when applied properly. The issues occur when the blister: a) has not been drained, b) is still weeping excessively, or c) the skin around the blister - where the adhesive needs to stick - is not thoroughly dry. At the end of her video...

Difference in walking Litoral to Central route

As noted, the Litoral/Coastal is flat until Castelo Do Neiva, and even after that there are only a few hills of about 100 meter elevation gain. If you stick to the Litoral you will even avoid a few of the 100 meter hills on the Coastal. In February 2020, after Marinhas, I did not find the...

Any risk of walking without insoles?

Hi @Johnnnyk Great advice so far, and suggest you consider: 1) Good quality socks fit as tight as possible, without cutting off circulation, so that any friction takes place between the sock and shoe, rather than the skin and sock. 2) A lacing technique to loosen laces over the metatarsals...

    25 km per day?

A Camino is a stroll, much like the groomed path up the Brocken. ;) If you want a real hike try the Gros Morn Traverse, but be careful not to pitch your bivy on a game trail. Moose, caribou, bear, wolves, coyote are active at night. :) I'll likely be strolling a Camino.:)

One (water) bottle to rule them all?

Good point Jack. I use a water bottle buckle with 500 ml to 1.5 L water bottle and the occasional 1 or 1.5 litre bottle of Aquarius. Hydration bladders weigh 5.4 to 8.4 ounces. Collapsable water bottles weigh 2.7 to 5.3 ounces. Reusable water bottles weigh 0.43 to 0.5 ounces. Reusable water...

    New Wise Pilgrim feature

Thanks Trecile. That's a great feature. Looking forward to using it. What's next? A voluntary digital credential and reservations might save volunteers time, and reduce those multiple reservations - are they still a thing? A digital Compostela would be too much to hope for, but think of the...

Bugs / Insects on Route Frances

IMHO, Avoidance works best, followed by a strong, constant breeze. Mosquitoes (and black flies?) don't like the hot sun. Might help explain so few along the Frances. They like shade, and are more likely at dusk, overnight and early morning. Mosquitoes need standing water to reproduce (lay...

Bugs / Insects on Route Frances

David61: Does size matter? I used to think that small sand flies and black flies were the worst until I visited the UNESCO sites in Labrador where the giant mosquitoes are so big that some people, like salmon fly fishers, have been known to wear upper body nets. There might be a picture on this...

    Route advice for Newbie

Welcome to the forum. I agree with Doug. Your stages seem very reasonable. I've not walked the Spiritual Variant or that hop from Caminha to Valenca/Tui, but and you seem to allowing yourself plenty of time. If you're taking the boat from Vilanova to Pedron you could walk closer to SdC that...

    Rip off Restaurant

On your first Camino, how many times did you leave a Café thinking they had charged too little? Given the location and convenience. What would it cost you in London, Bath, Barnstaple or Birmingham? For struggling student on a tight budget: a Spanish guy I walked with would pick up a glazed...

Bugs / Insects on Route Frances

Free protein. That was the rationale when mosquitoes were attracted to the heat when cooking pancakes. :)

Bugs / Insects on Route Frances

We have never had any problem with bugs on any Camino. Head nets remind me of a friend who had an allergic reaction to what ever he had trapped inside the head net. From our fairly remote wilderness location, it took two days to get him to a cart track and eventual hospital.

    25 km per day?

We should be as good listeners!

    25 km per day?

It’s the journey - not the destination. You can always return. Schedules, targets, averages, and chasing certificates are distractions to leave at home. Think of the Peregrino we met who had started his Camino 25 years earlier, unable to return due to responsibilities until Covid forced...

    Completion Certificate

If you don't bother to collect the certificate thingy, will you still have completed a Pilgrimage, or a Camino? I'm simply pointing out that the compostela, like the distance certificate, is optional.
