A kilt is my preferred wear when walking. I managed to ‘acquire’ a length of genuine goretex material and made myself a lousy weather kilt cover. It works a treat. In passing I would also report that a woollen kilt has built-in air-con if things get hot.
Thanks for reply. I contacted the Way of St. Andrews way folk. Their reply to my specific queries was that I should consider another route or "hire someone to walk with me".
Hi, through this group may I appeal to any member who has walked the St. Columbia’s Way (Iona to St. Andrews) in Scotland to please P.M. me. I have a strong desire to walk this route next year but have a couple of route specific questions.
Hoping someone can help.

Midges tend to lay low if there is more than a light breeze. If you are drawn to the Coastal walk you are pretty sure of breezes and, at times, stronger winds. I don’t think they will present much of a problem.
Our climate is best described as ‘variable’. Personally I prefer May for walking, but...
Hi Sophie,
Happy to help.
Firstly I would point you in the direction of the ‘Fife Coast & Countryside Trust" website. They manage the two long distance footpaths in Fife. The online info is accurate and up to date.
Climate - the reason our landscape is green is because is rains a fair bit.

To add to the mix - I recently ‘found’ the "British Pilgrimage Trust". Their website contains masses of information on British pilgrimage routes and, if required, downloadable GPS tracks (with info on how to download). I am aiming to walk St. Columba’s Way from Iona to St Andrews later this...
It is recorded that medieval pilgrims travelled in groups for safety. The first member of any group to see the cathedral was given the title ‘Rex’ (King). That is why these statues were placed here.
Hi folks,
As my final Camino I decided to try and replicate a medieval pilgrim's journey returning home to Scotland from Santiago.
I had already walked and cycled the Camino 6 times on different routes and at varying times of year
I began walking from Santiago in October, 2015 but, due to tragic...
Chris, enjoy your Camino BUT if you plan to sleep in shared accommodation you will soon find that early leavers are classed alongside snorers. The noise an early leaver makes and the light cast from their head torch wakes other Pilgrims so you may learn some "new" words and phrases.
The second...
Hi Grayland,
All being well I plan to return St.Jean in the spring of next year and follow Spring north to Roscoff then go home for the Summer. In the Autumn I will return to Plymouth and walk north through England and finally Scotland. I will finally finish in the ruined Cathedral in St...
My first Camino began at my own front door and finished in Santiago. Since then although I have walked to Santiago many times, at different times of the year, aircraft have always brought me home. I have been left wondering what it would be like to begin in Santiago and walk home.
During the...
Hi all, on 8th October I will be leaving Santiago to walk to St.Jean as part of a longer walk. Please take time to say Hi if we meet.
Enjoy your space.
I was meeting to many people with the same first name - "Doctor" and sank into a horrible feeling sorry for myself mind set. Two things happened fairly close together that gave me the kick up the butt that I was needing. Johnnie Walker sent me a short email which got me thinking of things...
Sorry to be pedantic, but, "head banging" isn't quite correct - on the reverse side of the Tree of Jesse is a statue thought to be of one of the architects of the building Master Mateau. Pilgrims touched their forehead to the statues' forehead 3 times to share his knowledge.
