    REI Sale

Right now I’ve got a Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily long sleeve shirt (based on a recommendation here) and a pair of co-op ribbed shorts (which I wear under a hiking skirt) in my cart. I also like Kuhl pants but don’t really need another pair at the moment.

    Favorite Entrance to SDC?

For those who have done multiple routes, which “final stage” do you think is the most scenic way to enter SdC? Last August I walked in on the Frances, and then in December on the Portugues, which I found to be much more enjoyable than walking past the airport. This coming August, I will do it...

Pacemaker Implant Surgery Tomorrow. A New Phase for Future Caminos.

Good luck Dave. My father has a pacemaker -- it was outpatient surgery and he was back working (well, on the phone with colleagues) the next day!

Where do ( did ) you walk locally in 2024?

It’s Mother’s Day in the US and my kid and I started the day by walking a half-marathon near us in Pennsylvania. It’s pretty much the same distance as an ordinary stage at 21km and today it was raining the entire time, sometimes heavily - so definitely had that Camino vibe. 😅

Buying walking poles in Santiago or Muxia

In Santiago go to Pilgrims House - they have a barrel of donated poles. You can take what you like. Many albergues in Santiago also have left poles.

    Starting in O Porriño

I found O Porrino very easy to get to. I flew into to Vigo through Madrid (would have had to connect to get to Porto anyway) and took the bus, but there is also a train and, because Vigo is only 10 miles from O Porrino, even a taxi isn’t that expensive.

    The Camino will provide?

...really have a “true Camino experience” unless you eschew bag transport and just walk each day until you are ready to stop, not “confining yourself” to a specific resting place. (Indeed, at least at the moment I’m typing this, they thread just below this one is offering advice to *not* book...

    Route advice for Newbie

I stayed in Milladora and thought it was the perfect distance for the final day. Just outside of town you can catch your first glimpse of the Cathedral as inspiration and you will arrive in plenty of time for the Pilgrim‘s Mass.

Best app to accurately record distances, elevation and descent per day

Interesting - I’m still using my free version without any issues.

Best app to accurately record distances, elevation and descent per day

The basic features are free. You’ll be limited in the number of photos, editing options, etc. without a subscription but otherwise the app works.

Where do ( did ) you walk locally in 2024?

Pennsylvania has an abundance of state parks with beautiful trails to walk year-round. I hit up Hickory Run for one this morning.

    Pilgrimage or vacation?

I don’t understand how going on a retreat “contributes to the welfare of others.” Nor do I see how walking the Camino does either (unless you are a hospitalero, but in that case you aren’t actually walking). Indeed, it seems that these are all equally “selfish,” if you will. They involve...

    Pilgrimage or vacation?

My Camino walks are definitely my vacations. Admittedly, I'm not walking with a religious motive, but I don't think the two terms are incompatible. A "vacation," to me at least, means leaving the routines of my normal life -- work, doing chores, attending "functions" of various kinds -- behind...

    Fragas do Eume

On one of the FB forums, someone asked about detouring to Fragas do Eume, just outside of Pontedeume, and it looks amazing. Since I'm splitting up Ferrol - Pontedeume into two days (taking the long way around the estuary), I would have plenty of time to visit. Has anyone done this? Thoughts?

    The Camino for LGBTQ

...people walking for religious reasons? I've walked twice with my kid, who is very obviously nonbinary, but did not walk with any religious purpose.* If they are someone you would be interested in talking with, I can put you in touch. *We are both athiest Jews, although my kid does teach...

    Rain Pants?

I've also become a rain skirt fan. Although purchased for my Camino, I wore it skiing a number of days this season and it kept my pretty dry in pouring rain both while skiing down and riding the lifts up (I'm a patroller and don't really have the option not to ski in the rain).
