Backpack: UL vs. Structured vs. In-between

I guess it is whatever you feel comfortable with. I use an old unstructured ex UK Army rucksack. I have used the same one on all my caminos and never felt the need to change it. I typically carry around 10kg (ex wine and water!) and walk around 30 to 40 kms a day. Now I weigh around 70kgs, 177...

Anything you want for Camino but it doesn't seem to have been invented?

I quite fancy a drone that could carry a rucksack and which had a ‘follow me’ option…….

Experienced pilgrims - opinions on waterproof socks?

Never felt the need. My hiking shoes keep my feet dry most time. However, if I have to go through anything more than ankle deep I normally just carry on walking and empty the shoes after crossing. The socks and shoes normally dry out soon enough and it has never caused me any problems.

    Best apps for offline maps?

If you use wikiloc tracks it is even easier as you can set it to alert if you are more than 50m or so off track!

Good news about the FindPenguins app!

I could never get it to work so stoped trying!

    Water

Plenty, as you cannot walk far if you get dehydrated. I always carry about 5l in my sac and another 3 as spare. In addition, I always take a very large drink of water at the start of the day!

    Hiking Poles - Burgos

lo Look for the ever present ‘Chinese’ shops that sell a bit of evrything. They will sell good poles and bit less expensve. The last omnes O bought from such a shop have done more than 4000kms with me.

Is a pack liner a good idea or nah?

Good pilgrims get themselves organised before they go to sleep so there is no need for any noise or infuriating lights early in the morning.

    Shoelaces

I use no tie shoe laces like these for all my hiking (and golf shoes) - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B074KL82TZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Have walked more than 2000kms on one pair of laces.

Performance Fabrics - Truth or Myth?

I agree with the OP. I use simple inexpensive polyester t shirts are shorts. They wash and dry easily and simply work for me.

Flying a drone on the camino

I am waiting for a drone with a "follow me” option that can carry a rucksack!

Translation app - when language fails us

SayHi is my most used app for translating. Plus I love the ability to use it to have a conversation.

Surprised at our test results poncho vs jacket

I mostly use a poncho but they can be a nuisance in strong winds so I always carry a rain jacket (and trousers as well). I get my ponchos from the sort of shops in spain that sell farming goods. They cast about 20 euros and seem to be favoured by the people who work on the land.

Would it be overkill to bring both a rain jacket and the Altus poncho in Oct/Nov?

I always take a rain jacket, trousers and a poncho no matter when I am walking.

Backpack is 2 kg too heavy TwT

I weigh about 68 kilos and happily carry a 10kg pack beofre adding water (and wine!)

    Poles or No Poles?

At 70 I still find no need for poles. I just walk a lot.
  18. MikeJS

    Poles or No Poles?

You most definitely do not need them. However, you may want to use them. On all of my caminos I have always just carried a single pole (normally strapped to my back pack) for those tricky water crossings and to fend off the odd overly intrusive dog.
  19. MikeJS

What do you wash your clothes with

I use a bar of household soap for everything.

Those who have walked at least one Camino - What are your favorite insoles and why?

It does seem to be the case. I have walked a few caminos and often walk 40km or more a day and very rarely get any blisters at all. It seems my feet are a ‘standard’ size!
