How many days off did you take on the CF?

It’s not just about “doing” the Camino. To my mind it’s about “experiencing “ this pilgrim route people have been walking for over one thousand years. There are so many really interesting and historic places so my view is to aim for 40-42 days. This allows for rest days together with time to...

How to spend a rainy morning in St Jean

I think there is a lot to see. It’s a matter of asking and wandering around. One entrance arch is where people arrive from Le Puy. Can walk the battlements and of course the pilgrims office for lots of information details on every place to stay, phone numbers etc and 🏧 etc all the way to...

    Walking in Rain

Ever tried to put on a poncho over your pack on your own in windy and rainy weather? That will give you some idea of how difficult it is. Rain jacket doubles as a wind cheater as well so much more versatile. Rain pants keep rain off and if warm can be worn over underwear. Very versatile, easy...

    Injury - in Oviedo now

Very sorry to hear of your injury. I have been to hospital in Spain twice while walking a Camino and found them excellent. They take special attention to pilgrims.

    Travel from Santiago to Lisbon

One point to consider. The train accepted my senior card/status so very big discount particularly in Portugal

    Hikers / Lamb Wool

Suggest use with caution If intended for the front of the footwear it can cause its own problems, as I found out. It bunches up, a type of felting from pressure, sweat and heat. Perhaps I wasn’t using it correctly. ???

The case for preserving the descent into Zubiri.

I agree. The difference between my first CF over 10 years ago and again in 2018 was awful blue metal on parts before Zubti and other sections completely concreted. Very hard on the feet and legs.

    How to choose shoes?

It’s a serious matter. A few tips gained painfully Buy footwear a half or full size larger than normal as feet swell. If normal can loose toe nails particularly walking down hills. Also more rubbing. If hot weather unlikely to need boots, walking sandals are an option. If cold then boots will...

Ideas on ways to extend the Coastal Camino portuguese

As well as the coastal path there is the seaside or Atlantico path which includes boardwalks and a bit of beach. It passes a lot of places where farmers are drying kelp to fertilise the land, old sea ponds etc. it can interact with the coastal if you wish. Spiritual Variation a must.

    Ordering new Meindl hiking shoes

I have had mine repaired. Being an EU brand should not be any customs issues if ordered from a German stockist. Best to get repaired

Fleece, thin down or both under North Face rain jacket? (Leaving tomorrow)

Generally start with minimum layers if you have a vent jacket as the outer layer as you will definitely warm up as you walk. Easier than starting fully layered then having to stop soon after, take off your pack, jacket etc to remove one layer. Light weight merino is my choice, 150 grams for...

First Camino from Lisbon to Porto

I can see there is a lot of excellent replies for you. The Forum is such a loving community Please bear in mind the Camino is yours and if you need to take a bus or train for a short section you can. In fact John Brierly, unfortunately no longer with us, urges readers to take a bus into some...

    Pack Cover Failure

The good ones have drainage holes in the bottom. Just make sure they are unhindered. My wife always uses a rubbish bag as an internal liner. I just use stuff bags.

    Sun Sleeves?

I wear light gloves to protect my hands from the sun when it’s sunny especially when using walking poles. Heavy ones when it’s cold for warmth. I love my Columbia trekking shirt with sleeves that role up and can be secured with a loop and button. Great protection also from bugs and scratches...

    Bouncing between Central and Coastal

Consider also the Atlantico which is really along the seaside. Closer to the sea than the coastal while in Portugal. Some boardwalks etc and off the beaten track.

Food on the via la plata

Agree the biggest trap I found was small villages with limited store opening times or ones where everything is closed because of feast days. The exception being bakeries. The host at your accommodation will be able to tell you Small tins of tuna etc are a great standby with crackers
