Volunteering at the Pilgrim Welcome Centre

Do you get free accomodation while volunteering in Saint Jean? What about food? From @David Tallan thread about Salamanca there seems to be a deal where hospitaleros get some discount at one restaurant but i guess that is not the case everywhere. Is it possible to volunteer if you do not speak...

    Splitting bills with fellow pilgrims

Unless spanish law is fundamentaly different from german law (which i doubt, afaik contract law is pretty similar through europe) you are only liable for what you ordered. Technically. Yes, the waiter/manager/owner will most likely have a different opinion. And in most szenarios it wont be worth...

    Sleeping Pad? Day pack?

Pad: I don't think so. I actually carry one in my pack, but its main reason is reducing volume, giving the pack rigidity and pad my back a bit. And i can use it as a sitting / yoga mat if i want to. In a pinch sleeping on it would be better than sleeping on the ground, but just so. Never needed...

    Splitting bills with fellow pilgrims

Theres people i bicker with about money and theres people with whom i have more than one dinner. They are mutually exclusive. On the last camino it was more often than not the discussion on who was allowed to pay. Good thing we can chose the company we keep.

    EU airline passenger rights

Glad to hear that everything went smoothly (at least with the compensation). My personal experiences are a bit different, and i heard not just one story of the airline fighting tooth and nail to not having to pay. No experience with Iberia, maybe they are the exception to the rule. With...

Backpack: UL vs. Structured vs. In-between

While i did not own a Kumo personally (i had the lighter Murmur and now the Bonfus Iterus) i like to recommend it very much for people that can their weight decently low. It is not a huge pack, and if you get your things inside it you will not have a problem with the weight. I like the features...

Packing List Review & Questions 3 days before departure.

Regarding your specifics: 1. Yes, you should not have problems to find available beds. However some albergues might be already closed for the season. Might need a tiny bit of planning, but overall should not be a problem. 2. On 3 caminos i have not needed a powerbank. But have a good...

The best time to walk the Camino Frances May or September?

May and September are both very busy. There are regularly reports of big waves of pilgrims at that time. You can still be lucky and get "between" the waves, but do not expect things to be empty either way. For me it was always a natural decision to walk in May. Lots of public holidays to work...

Bed sheets? Are they always available?

Usually you are provided bedsheets and pillow casings. Many times one-use plastic ones. Sometimes cotton ones. Sometimes cotton ones that are already on the bed and maybe not only for that very day. Usually you can find some sort of blanket. Usually it is not freshly washed. Sometimes it is...

    MEC Serratus 40 ul

Doesn't look horrible, doesn't look gamechanging. It's more or less light. Not ultralight. Has some decent features. Lacks some sensible features. Is not horribly expensive, is not super cheap. Yeah, why not have a look at it. But at the same weight and similar price i'd rather take something...

When did they start playing the bagpipes in the Praza do Obradoiro?

The pipe player was there when i walked in the first time in 2019. I would not be surprised if that thing started some years earlier. After having walked in a few more times now, I am not so sure if I really like it. But i can see how it is nice for the first timers... I would guess as with...

How to spend a rainy morning in St Jean

Theres the church you can visit, but i found it not so super interesting to spend more than a few minutes inside. But i guess a more religous person could spend more time there. Then there is the pilgrims office, and i guess depending on how busy they are you could go for a chat with them...

    Gossamer Gear G4-20 Ultralight 42 Backpack ?

Too big and too heavy for my personal taste, but i like Gossamer packs. They are well built and beginner friendly. Also some nice features. Personally i regard the G4 as a weird in-between and not my favorite. If you want to go light, theres the Kumo (and Murmur, but i stand with the official...

    Buying an Apartment in Spain?

Afaik the "inheritance tax" in Spain is seriously high (maybe only for real eastate?), much higher than in Germany for example. So its not only the capital gains. This might also be worth looking into.

    Buying an Apartment in Spain?

Consider that you won't be the first person with the idea of co-financing their holiday home with renting it out. People have been doing that for decades. Yes, it can work, but it can also fail. Won't be easier when you're on the other side of the world.

    Buying an Apartment in Spain?

This might not be the answer you been looking for: I do have some personal experience from my family with property in Spain. I feel that if you want to make it work, you either have to be super smart about it, put in a lot of money to have someone do it for you or put in a lot of effort by...

Camino Frances calls more strongly than the other caminos

Walked my first CF in 2019, wantet to do the Portoguese in 2020, but then came Covid. No time in 2021. After much internal debating, i went to the CF again in 2022. My main concern was that i would be trying to recreate the experience from the first time, and i knew that would not be possible...

    Albergues off the path

Stayed at San Bol in 2022. It was run by a cuban couple and they were very friendly and made a nice dinner for us that looked a lot like Paella but he was insistent it was some cuban dish. Overall a nice experience, but there is no wifi and Vodafone does not have service there. Had a chill...

Is there really a waterproof solution

Used mine on all my caminos. Love that thing. But your lower legs and feet will get wet. I can live with that, since i generally walk in spring. For colder/wetter seasons it might not be optimal.

Is there really a waterproof solution

When it rains for this long with some intensity there is practically no way to keep dry. Simply because your sweat has no where to go. So even with the best raingear, you will become wet. Period. The trick is wearing clothes that still provide warmth when wet, like merino or polypropylen...
