    A secular Camino?

I walked 50 miles alone in the Cami Sant Jaume. Most of my photos were of plants and buildings. As an adamant non-Christian, I wondered what I was doing there. At first it was to join a tradition, and walk an Old Way, and have a predetermined path to walk. Then it was about plants and how to get...

All the gear but no idea

Speaking as an Americana, it's my opinion that the Camino starts at your own front door.

My first packing list for a decade and not pleased ....

Packing list: I laid out all my t shirts and arranged them by weight, with help from the battery kitchen scale. I took with me only the lightest weight ones, and the same with underpants. I wore dark trousers when off road, light colored while walking near cars. I also weighed all my little...

    Let's talk waist packs!

This is why I wear mens' pants (trousers). I always wear them. I get the ones with pleats in the front to accomodate my shape. And four pockets, at least!

    Let's talk waist packs!

No Not offensive, amusing! So many new words to learn, at age 16, I was an American in London.

    Let's talk waist packs!

I sewed my own waist pack. It's light cotton trouser fabric, just a flat envelope with a divider in the middle and one zipper on the front. It ties around me with a shoelace sewn into the seams. The division closer to my body has the things I use less or not at all, but CANNOT lose - my home...

    Which hat looks better?

If the weather is hot and sunny, B will keep you cooler. A looks cooler, of course, but who cares?

My walk Llançá to Santa Cilia de Jaca March/April 2019

I walked by a small capella in the hills west of Osor in Catalunya, and the place was trashed. People had lit fires, broken walls, stolen building materials, painted graffiti. It was so sad. But typical of what people do. I'm sorry some towns have lost their ancient treasures, but the treasures...

Wimpy Merino Shirts, Or Is It Just Me

I bought merino long johns years ago and they did not last. The cotton ones i bought at the same time lasted for years and years. For hiking i wear my regular clothing, my cool weather layers are a cotton shirt, a wool sweater (Brit: jumper) and a raincoat. As for wool socks, I knit my own with...

Best One Day Walk on Any Camino?

Lovely photos, companyes! My favorite day was the one where I saw a shepherd and his dog watching a field of sheep, near Pontos, Catalunya. Also here are some Camino signs I particularly enjoyed.

The second I know as red-hot-poker. The first is a lovely mystery.

    Pilgrim "customs"?

I totally agree with this. When I am home, I'm home. As soon as I step out my door, my journey - to wherever - begins.

List of Useful Services on the Catalan Way via San Juan de la Peña

How can a route be fake? I started at Sant Pere de Rodes, partly walked and partly got rides for various reasons, ended in Vic. My path led me thorough Girona, and I found my own Way. If the road I'm on takes me to where I'm going, it is real. 500 years from now, the Cami Sant Jaume will be...

My walk Llançá to Santa Cilia de Jaca March/April 2019

Leaving Bàscara a year and a half ago, morning of la Dia de Catalunya, I ran into powdered lime markings across the Cami which led me West and then north, back to the bakery. When I got back into town, it was over run with people in race - running clothes! Oops!

    European sim cards

My Motorola Android had no problem with a Vodafone SIM card. I only had to notify my European contacts of my temporary new number. Nothing else was lost or inconvenienced.

Walking The Camino Without Training. Fool's Errand?

They say that the way to get in shape for walking the Appalachian Trail is the first 200 miles. I'm 2+ years late, but I say just do it!
